Looking at the LM website, several of the balls (Buzz, WC/R, BRB, BP . . .) show their coverstock prep as "factory polish".

Ok, but what does that equate to? I know Charlest posted earlier about the Big Bang being close to OOB finish at (if I remember correctly) 600 or 800 grit sanded with a healthy dose of LM polish (or the new fav -- Valentino's Snake Oil) applied. Is this correct? Trying to ensure I have correct info before I start altering the coverstocks more than a light scuffing or light polishing.

there factory polish is about 1500 grit.

If you are looking to actually duplicate the surface and reaction, you want to first use Resurrection or 800 grit sandpaper as the base surface and then apply Snake Oil which is 1500grit. That will restore the factory look, preformance and reaction.

I actually have a picture of my Big-R-Bang in the photo section. I put the surface at 600 because I like my Big-R-Bang to rebound and read off the dry harder, plus it gives a more vicious snap.

The finish for the Big-R-Bang is very different from that of the Big Bang.

The Big Bang's finish can be emulated by an application of Resurrection. Remember that Big Bang's finish is what Lanemasters calls, "sheen". Their process is actually rather complicated.

The polished finish of the Big-R-Bang is not truly a "1500 grit polished" but 800 grit "extra" polished finish. (Maybe the results will or can be similar to "1500 grit polished" but since that phrase varies so much by manufacturer (compare Visionary to Storm & Roto-Grip!), I have no confidence in any statement, but only in the physical results.)

Lanemasters Factory Finish polish is similar to that of Snake Oil in that both are "non-abrasive". Snake Oil puts on more of a shine more quickly than Lanemasters. The finish of the Big-R-Bang and others labeled as "polished", by Lanemasters, includes an 800 grit sanding plus, if you will, a double dose of their polish, to give a high gloss polish.

As things stand know, with respect to my knowledge of Lanemaster Factory Finish polish and Snake Oil, you need a larger dose of Lanemasters to get that same gloss that you get with Snake Oil. You still need a strong dose of Snake Oil.

To play it safest, you really need a factory finished ball to compare your working ball with during the process of polishing.

Thanks for the responses. I'd love to have a factory polished ball to compare against, but of the mumble mumble 14 mumbleballs I have of theirs, only 3 were NIB, and all 3 were particle balls. I've gotten a list together of each ball and the OOB surface as per LM, but that listing of 'factory polish' were the ambiguous ones.

Now that I know what the 'standard' finishes are, the experiementation can begin.
