Sure Strike!
« on: August 23, 2007, 01:56:54 PM »
Well I drilled my Sure Strike up tonight for a SASBA tournament this weekend in Little Rock! The specs were 23/4" pin and 3oz top before drilling and I placed the pin in the center of my grip and used a 45* layout with a WH online from GC thru CG past my VAL, it's 63/4" from GC. The ball rolled real smooth, even, and started up earlier in the midlane compared to my Sting which is 45* with pin under ring finger. The ball hit extremely hard and left a few 9 pins and 8 pins, but the jury is still out until this weekend! Thanks, Bruce
P.S. It's a great looking ball, medium blue pearl!

Got mine Thursday(3 1/4 oz TW and 3 1/4" pin)and had it drilled it up 4 x 3, pin over ring and cg close to the ML, WH to get it legal (drilled exactly like one of my Hornets); I'll roll it this weekend and report back.

Just got back from practicing; rolled two games with this new Lane Master monster and I LOVE it !!! (236 and 226 with 1 open each game [4-9 and 7-10]; wood lanes and a medium-light weekend pattern ... standing 27-29, opened the lane up and this ball had NO problem coming back !!!
Based upon the review that Buddies did on it recently, I'd concur that the reactive pearl cover may squirt a bit on medium-heavy oil but it should have no problem with medium patterns. Spoke to Galen Gentry after getting it on Thursday and I feel confident that knocking the shine off and taking it up to 1000 or 2000 abralon will correct that issue.
IMHO and FWIW, I feel that Legends has another winner on its hands ... and from their new mid-performance line no less !!!

The imporant question, to my mind, is
How does it compare to the Buzz?

The layouts are different on the ones that I have had between the two of them and the cores are different too ... but this higher RG ball seems to gets down the lane a bit further and with no loss of backend reaction; IMHO ... better on a fresh shot than the BUZZ.

For me, the Sure Strike is slightly longer and way stronger on the back than the Buzz.  I received a SS with a 4 1/2" pin (box said 3 7/8) but this worked out better for what I was looking for. I drilled this 5 x 3 with the pin about 1 1/2" above my ring and the cg (on midline) kicked just slightly right, no weight hole.  The backend is huge.  I hit it with Black Magic XL and it was still way too strong for what I was looking for.  Talked w/Galen on Friday and will hit it with a 4000 abralon pad and then the Black Magic XL again.  Looking to get more length out of it on old wood lanes.

I didn't realize that this ball had the Masterpiece core in it (slightly modified to raise the rg).  I didn't see the similarity when I saw the picture of the core.

As with all of the L/LM equipment, this ball hits and carries great, especially from a deep angle.  I went practicing Friday night because this center (yes Jeff, the pit), although the manager promised to run the machine right before the first shift leagues start, is DRY.  They ran the machine Monday night for first shift and when I threw my first practice ball I hit the 4 pin.  I guess he never promised to have oil in the machine.  I wound up using my XXXL the third game and even that overhooked anywhere to the right of 14.  Anyway, back to the SS.  I went to practice using this ball from 5th arrow, not my A or B game because I usually don't carry well from that deep.  The SS demolished the pins from that deep angle.  The carry was very impressive.  It still was very sensitive to early hook if I let my speed up just a bit so will hit it with 4000 and reapply the Black Magic XL and see if that does it.

I told Galen we need this core inside the Hornet shell!

JS,

You put the pin ABOVE the ring finger??
Wait, Chicken Little, the sky IS falling!

Thanks for the comparison. Don't you also have the Hornet? Didn't that work for the broken down wood lanes you're talking about (Strike 'n'SPare???) ?

charlest,

Pin up; Yea, I'm just getting wild and crazy in my old age .

As for the Hornet, it was too strong to play a straighter line (my XXXL was overhooking) and I had to be real accurate when I was aiming at the 8 board at about 45 feet downlane, crossing 4th arrow.  I was looking for something that would give me a couple of boards to play with.  But when I did hit what I was looking at, surprisingly the Hornet made a hard move and carried very well from that deep of an angle.  I guess I was just looking for an excuse to try the Sure Strike
