Switching to Legends?
« on: June 27, 2007, 06:11:40 AM »
I may be switching to LM/L soon and want to build a tournament arsenal within the same company. I carry 7 balls that are:
1. spare ball
2. Low hook arc type ball
3. Low hook skid/flip ball
4. Mid hook Arc
5. Mid Hook Flip
6. Big hook arc
7. Big hook Flip

currently, 1= blue dot 2= Super trooper 3= Pearl Beast 4= Wrath Xp 5= Wicked 6=Wow! Particle 7= Big Shot.

I know this probably gets posted a lot, but what is the best of each of these categories in Lane masters line (feel free to post 2 per category if two fit). I believe I have access to every ball in the current line as well as those discontinued, so feel free to put Kong, Big Kahuna...etc if they fit. I know that #1= arrow, #2 and #3= Buzz or Hornet. Please help me with 4-7.
Much appreciated.

No offense but, since the idea of low hook, med hook, big hook went out with urethane balls, I assume you mean
- light to medium-light oil handling ball,
- medium to medium-heavy oil handling ball,
- medium-heavy to heavy oil ball

There's no such thing as a skid/flip heavy oil ball.

Arrow
Hornet
Buzz
World Class Reactive or Masterpiece
Big Kahuna OR Black Pearl
Big Bang or World Class
Terminator, slightly sanded

First off, thank you for taking the time to post. I appreciate the input on the ball selection. Secondly, as far as offending me, you didn't, but you really are just using different words to describe the same thing as far as I'm concerned. If you have a 500 grit particle ball; I call it a big hooking ball (or more accurately a ball with a big hook rating as is still used on all ball websites and magazines), you call it a ball for heavy oil. Same thing really.
And I have been throwing Columbia exclusively for a very long time and I would classify the Action Max (overall hook rating of 63. 40 in oil and 23 on the dry) a very arc-y Big hook ball, while the Big Shot (hook rating of 58. 26 in oil and 32 on the dry) would be a flippy big hook (or flippy heavy oil ball). I think the Big-R Bang Or the WCR would be that ball in this line, but I welcome everyone's opinion (which is why I posted this in the first place).

Questions though: It appears by the numbers that the Big Kahuna and theBlack Pearl are very different. Would the Kong and the Black Pearl not be closer? All your other selections are pretty close to what I had in my mind. Thanks again for your time and input.

(God bless this keyboard - 20 minutes of typing wiped out in a millisecond!)

1. Make sure you get a handle on the ball reaction of at least 3 different LM/L balls before you commit to a Lm/L arsenal. They are relatively different from most other manufacturers. People lacking knowledge about these balls often claim their high RGs won't let them be used when early hook & roll are needed. Balls are always core+cover and the individual parts cannot be separated by the specs. Lm/L designers match up covers and core fairly well. FYI you'll rarely find an earlier rolling oiler than the World Class.

2. Regarding the BP and BK, I only had one BP and probably let other's experiences influence my drilling selection more than I should. I couldn't get it to be useful on true medium-hevay oil until I modified the surface to about 1500 grit matte. Even then I wasn't happy with the reaction; so I sold it. I have 3 BK (2 16 lb and 1 15 lb one). I can  use it on medium to medium-heavy oil. Higher or further pins (5") will skid/flip; lower or closer pins will arc. It is spookily strong ball for a core with such a relatively small RG differential - .036" (thus, flare, 4"). Maybe my experience with BKs allows me a lot more confidence in them. I know they have a small to medium sized hook, YET they can handle a good deal of oil - the smaller hook gives you a lot of control and power.

3. I have a Big Shot and drilled it strong, 4x4,; it gives me a good sized hook from medium to almost medium-heavy oil. It doesn't skid/flip for me. I can see it doing that, though, if I were to use it on true medium-heavy oil, BUT I'd have to square up more and throw it slower.

4. The Masterpiece, FOR ME, is more equivalent to (possibly a 1/4 to 1/2 a step down from) the Big Shot. The WCR or the BRB are a step down from the BS and the MP, in my mind.

For reference sake, I am rev dominant, normally, and can usually use a weaker ball for a set amount of oil. My less than average ball speed for my rev rate, normally, also gives me more time to get more flare from a given ball, for a given drilling. Been working on this, though ...

Again thanks for your time. I think I'm going to try that big hook..I mean heavy oil World Class, and a Big-R Bang to start, then go from there. I'll let you know what I think when I get them. Thanks again.

You're trying to say something, I'm sure of it.  I just can't figure out what it is.

I talked briefly to the driller here (that I don't normally use due to his insane prices for grips and slug and the fact that his price sheet lists balance holes separately) and he didn't think that L/LM would be bad for me, even being speed dominant.  Maybe I'm getting better about matching my revs to my speed.

Sorry about that; it was VERY late and I was tired.

People have claimed that because of their generally high core's RG values, Lanemaster/Legends balls would ALL ONLY be appropriate when you need length from the core. My counter is that they, Lanemasters, designs bowling balls depending on the ball reaction they need/want. Just because the core's specs give what many manufacturers indicate is a RELATIVELY high to medium-high RG value is no reason to assume that the ball using said core will ALWAYS "go long".

Most/many Lm/L coverstocks are relatively strong and grippy; they match well with the such cores to produce a WIDE variety of ball reactions, all the way from very "grabby" reactions, such as the World Class and the NS2. to good length ones, such as the Buzz, Hornet, and the Big-R-Bang. The match-up of the core to the coverstock is the "MAGIC" recipe.

I would stay away from the big-r-bang and add a big bang, Charlest suggestions are almost exactly what mine would be. Charlest and laybzz74 are well versed in the L/LM balls we all have every one of these balls.

I know of a few people that love the Big-r-bang and shoot lights out with it, i did not like the unpredictability of the ball for me.
