Yeah Baby!

Ok, so I broke down and got one.  The last night of our PBA league, the pro shop guy comes out with a new YB he just drilled and I asked if he'd like to fill in for my teammate with a bum knee.  He threw it a few times, didn't really care for it.  I believe it was the Viper pattern or the Shark pattern.  It didn't really finish well, he had a lot of light hits, some carried some didn't.

At the end of the night, he says he doesn't like it and offered me a really great price for it.  For a ball with all of 15 shots on it, I couldn't pass it up.  He was even able to avoid plugging it, he just put in a solid slug and drilled it off center, our spans were close enough to do that.

I'll try throwing it in league tomorrow.

I got all the goodies from the box, too.  I watched the DVD, and while those guys may know a lot, and it's clear that they do, they seem a bit put off being in front of a camera.

Edit: It's drilled with the pin next to the ring finger and the CG about an inch right of stacked with a weight hole about 4 1/2" from my grip center.  For me, it's about a 4 1/2 x 3 1/2.

I'd bet he either drilled it to strong or there just wasn't enough oil for it. This ball needs serious head AND midlane oil to perform at its best, Even then it's going to cover a LOT of boards.

My personal experience:
When I first got mine, I didn't know what to expect of it. So I drilled it the same as my New Standard, roughly 4x5. I played the same line as the NS only because it seemed to work. However, while the NS just killed the pins, the YB was pinging 10 pins like there'd be no tomorrow. I must have left 7 10 pins in the first 9 frames, literally! On a whim I moved my feet 5 boards deeper and kept the same breakpoint. NOw we were cooking! If anything it moved the pins even more than the NS, including light and high hits. I wound up playing 7-8 boards deeper than the NS, which is not a small hooking ball.

His PAP is lower than mine, it probably was closer to 3" pin-to-PAP for him.  Looking at his track, he's probably in the 4 1/2" range, I'm 6"+.  He also threw an Action Max and a TNV, neither of which really turned up to the pocket real well.  I threw my Thing Lives drilled 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 and had a good reaction, so there was a good bit of oil.

If I can throw it before tonight, I'll see if maybe some polish will help.  The middle finger insert is, I'm very sure, too small.  I complained about that but he kept saying that if I can get my finger in (I can, but I can almost hold the ball up with it), it's not too small.  It fit ok when he was fitting me, and usually installing it opens it up a little, but this is too tight.

Can you open up inserts with a knife?  He said he'd replace 'em if they don't work out, but he won't be around 'til Thursday (he splits his time between two shops).

Turns out you can.  Looks like crap, though.

1. YB is a notch or so more of an oiler than the Thing Lives. If you used the TL and he tried to use the YB with a 3" pin to PAP, to work effectively I'd have to believe he'd need a lot more ball speed than you used with the TL.

2. Inserts SHOULD come out very easily, prying the sides gently with a 1/8" flat bladed screwdriver. I would hope he did not glue the insert all around the rim. Normally only 2 tiny drops at opposite sides are needed to hold an insert forever, and that allows them to be removed and replaced with no sweat.

I didn't have any replacements, so taking the thing out altogether would have left me with a ball with one insert and one very large finger hole.  I took an exacto-knife and kinda scraped the ever loving shti out of the inside of it.  Really tore it to pieces, but I could get my finger in it.  Lined it with some cellophane tape to keep it form tearing my finger up.  I'm going to take it back tomorrow to get it fixed up.

I threw it some tonight until the tape gave up the ghost.  For a dull, high-load particle ball, I was very surprised.  It was more angular than my Energy, and about five to eight boards stronger than my TL.  I stood on 30, threw over 15 out to about 5 at the breakpoint and never once worried about missing the head pin.  My other stuff didn't bounce like this ball did.

And the "Legends crack" that y'all talk about.  True, every time.

At first glance, with less than three games on it, this is a really great ball.

FYI Acetone will nicely open up many inserts. Just use a thin cloth, like an old undershirt, and soak your pinky tip and work the back of the inside of the insert. I've done to a couple of them.

Yes, the YB gets good length for a high load particle and lots of overall hook and does "CRACK" the pins. But remember it needs a good deal of head oil or lots of ball speed. Wish I could find enough oil to use mine; still ain't letting it go for a Terminator or a World Class or any other big hooker anyone makes.

Keep it clean before putting it back in the bag!!
