totally screwed up my Black Pearl
« on: November 07, 2006, 10:17:43 AM »
I did an exotic drill... that my drilelr suggested and its horrible.. gonna plug it and redrill it....

Drill was pin above middle finger.. cg kicked right 4:30.. 4 inch pin... an extreme length drill and its the most over under piece of junk I ever rolled.

Gonna try a better pattern soon...

Totaly pissed off right now, after my Big R bang was a total piece of junk

This is mine ... and it's SWEET and STRONG !!!

3 oz TW (NIB) and 3 1/2" pin,
3 3/4 x 3 3/4 layout, pin above & right of the ring,
cg 3/8" above the midline, OOB, no WH
(My stats are in my profile too)

BTW, I got that layout per the recommendation of Galen Gentry himself at Legends; to be honest, not all the layouts that he has given me have be great (a learning process for both of us) BUT ... I HIGHLY recommend consulting him for his advise so as to try and "match up" a layout for needs.

Mine is drilled pin directly under ring finger CG stacked below.  Hooks a ton but still very controllable. Pin over the fingers drillings act stupid on the break for me.

Not sure why your driller chose that layout but that's a very finicky layout for high rev players.  It's not really exotic but it sounds like it places the pin about 6" from your axis.  When you place the pin this far on this strong a ball, it tends to make it over/under (especially on fresh) because the core position isn't enough to play the oil but the cover is way too strong to play the dry (ball can go sideways for high rev players).     This layout works better on broken down patterns (mainly heads and mids) when you need the push through the front (hence the long pin to PAP) but you need the surface for carrydown.  This layout minimizes flare through the first part of the lane.

I would suggest a surface tweak and/or a weight hole tweak.  Try 2000grit or 4000grit abralon.  On balls where this layout was over/under, I would go with a "rev leverage" hole.  This is 6 3/4" from center of grip at 45* in thumb-positive quadrant.  Make sure you can go at least 3".  That might require burrying the middle finger hole first to create enough side and thumb.  This creates more flare and much stronger midlane which definately makes the ball more playable.

Did you try surface adjustments with it? Can work wonders...
I had/have a Pure Hammer set up pin far above bridge, CG more or less stacked, and it was polished up to give it even more length. With this setup it was an unplayable over/under hook monster!

I almost wanted to dump it, but then, nothing to lose, I sanded the ball to 1.500 grit and it is now a beautiful control piece. Made a change like day vs. night!

I find this drilling works well with higher MB balls, I also have a Action drilled even farther left of this with my pin over the left edge of the middle finger which is around 6 1/4 pin to pap with the cg in my grip center. Ball revs forever and makes a nice backend move very late, great for a 2 nd game of 1 st shift league were still is oil upfront but mids are going away slightly. The Action does not have a high mb but still has as stated before the surface i left it in box finish, i do not think Black Pearl has enough oob to make this move. For me i would guess an over/under nightmare but i have used the same exact layout with great success by placing the higher mb balls on the Val with the pin straight over the bridge. They start up early and keep on revving all the way through the deck, so with morich ball or some of the roto grip balls this layout has been per say the nuts.

Maybe just plug the middle finger reuse the ring finger as the new middle finger and that will be enough of a move to handle it. Btw since you come too Vegas alot why not try K&K bowling services for layouts and drillings, tell them Barry sent you go too either store but Green Valley is were i go.

I agree with alot of what he said, I have no experience with these balls but do with other manufactures and see where this layout can be touchy at first untill you get the surface right and that flat spot on the weight block in the right place (weight hole). Very good layout for spotty mids and heads not a real strong charge when it hits carry down though but will still turn the corner but may be a touch late. Play with the surface and look at putting a flare increaseing hole in it even if you have to drill one finger deeper than the other to get the weight right to do so, you want to alter the bottom of the weight block with a hole to help it flare, usualy the bigger the better as long as you can get to the block, try not to go bigger than your current thumb hole size though.

Well finally finding my PAP out.. that drill for me was like 6 inches from my PAP.. A serious NO NO... and about my Big R Bang that rolled at the arrows... they believe the balls coverstock was to soft.. and I shoulda sent it back to LM/L and had them test it.. instead of throwing it in the trash.. my bad.. but then again.. I wasn't the one who poured a bad ball.

Really big r bang too soft i think my ball was from the same batch i will try it a few practice games tonight when i let my 3 year old practice. I tried 2000 polish on it if it hooks up early again like out of the box i will know it is a bad batch ball. Out of the box the ball was going left at the arrows it was keeping up with infinite one on medium heavy oil no joke on that either.

Btw my 3 year old averages about 95 a game with the rack of course but somehow he still picks up some spares funny to watch hijack off.
