Discontinued Balls
« on: December 01, 2007, 07:54:11 AM »
I currently own a Masterpiece, Big Bang, Conqueror and my favorite L/LM ball ever, The Sting. I have previously owned the World Class, World Class/R, Terminator, and the Black Pearl.

I normally bowl on med-med/heavy conditions. The last few weeks I've practiced and bowled the first 5-10 frames with an Epic Quest and then switched to The Sting after the lanes have transitioned a bit. This has worked well for me, I've averaged nearly 230 for my last 36 games.

I have an opportunity to purchase a Kong or Guaranteed. How would they compare to the other L/LM balls I've owned? Or to others in my arsenal (see profile)? Any input on these two balls would be greatly appreciated.

The Kong with its stock surface was, for me and for a friend, a medium-light oil ball. It was very good for that oil amount. When the heads get drier, it needs to be put away OR have a decent polish put on it; after all, it is a solid particle.

I did put a serious gloss shine on one as a test and while it handled only slightly lighter oil than the stock surface, it hooked a whole lot more, for me. Stacked, 4x4 drill, pin in the ring finger. Its beakpoint stayed an even arc, with both surfaces.

FYI It is a notch to a 1/2 notch below the Masterpiece in hook and in oil handling ability, for me.

Thanks for the feedback....if the Kong is a half notch below the Masterpiece it is probably not worth my while to pursue. I can only use the Masterpiece during the summer, when they reduce the oil volume. With a stacked drill, OOB cover it is too long for the current condition. I thought the Kong might be stronger due to the particle cover. Thanks again for your, always appreciated, opinion.

That friend could probably be me....like he says the Kong is a little weaker than the MP, not as much back end, but smoother down the lane, a little stronger in the mid lanes obviously due to it being particle.

I like the Kong for control and the MP to turn over when the sludge hits the rear, the Kong hates carrydown, but I have had good success with the Kong on a fresh shot, great predictability and readibility.

Actually, A_P_K, it was JS. I hadn't seen you throw it enough except for a few frames last Thursday. But you had a similar reaction. I think it would be an excellent ball for you for Carolier's currrent oil pattern IF you can keep it outside of 4/5 board. But that is a hard task, as we both know.

JS and I were originally quite shocked to see that we both had the same reaction with a ball that was supposed to be for medium-heavy oil. In fact I bought mine to prove him wrong, but he was right. I was very disappointed, originally, until I came to see how good it was for medium-light oil and the amount of control it gave. However, the proviso that it needs the oil to remain, otherwise the particles will make it burn up too early as the oil dissipates. Plus it is not a big backend ball, UNLESS you polish it up and drill it to flip. Then you can move deeper.

Out of the balls you mentioned i have the Black Pearl, Terminator, Big Bang and World Class reactive.  I also have the New Standard, Big Kahuna and of course the Guaranteed.  I would say the Guaranteed (for me) rolls similar to the Big Bang motion wise (arc like with a smooth but hard roll).  But the Guaranteed hits about as hard as anything i have ever thrown.  For me it's not a true heavy oiler but med-med-heavy it is darn good. Drilling and surface is key.  Took me awhile to tweek mine but once i did it became a favorite.  Must also keep the coverstock clean after sets it picks up quite a bit of conditioner, but it has kept going strong.  The Big Bang has been ten pin city thus far. I also "love" the World Class/R.  Hope i have been helpful....good luck.

The Guaranteed is a great ball. It is a medium/medium heavy oil ball and has a predictable arc. It hits hard. I have had it for 2 years and now just reserve it for tournaments.
