Title: What do you think about the legends cleaner?
Post by: gfh2a on September 05, 2006, 11:20:22 AM
I picked up a ball from 302efi and he included the polish and cleaner.  I tryed the cleaner on my epic that has about 200 games on it.  The coverstock was a little shinny from the oil but after I cleaned it with the cleaner it was as dull as the first day I bought it.   And yes I have cleaned it many times before mainly with track clean n dull.  I have heard some people having trouble with clean n dull diminshing the hook for a game or two waiting for the residue to wear off.  How about the legends cleaner?  Besides the toxic smell is there anything you don't like about it?

Thanks

George

I was lead to believe by someone high up in Lanemasters that it's industrial grade isopropyl alcohol. (I am not certain that is true.) The highest strength isopropyl alcohol you can get in everyday stores is 91%.

It seems stronger than denatured ethyl alcohol to me. It cleans VERY thoroughly. I am not prepared to say it is stronger than Clean and Dull. It is probably the strongest everyday cleaner I have ever used. (C&D is not everyday for me.)

Be very cautious about breathing in its fumes. Do be in a very well ventilated area.

After seeing this thread, I decided to go try my sample of cleaner for the first time.  I used it on my Scorchin' Inferno which has taken on a pretty good shine after over 100 games.

I will agree with you that this stuff is strong!  I tested it in a small spot first, and I could tell a HUGE difference where the oil was removed and where it wasn't.

I cleaned the whole ball and it does appear at first glance to have similar results to Clean N Dull, just much easier and faster.  Less elbow grease and less residue to worry about.  The ball does appear to be very near its dull OOB condition now.

Then I decided to clean up my Tsunami, which definitely shows dirt and grime because the cover is partially colored white; what a difference!  Ball looks new again, and the tacky NIB feel has been restored.

I think I may have found a new favorite cleaner; will have to get a bigger bottle.  Hopefully I don't see a differnce on the lanes except the difference between a clean ball and a dirty one.

Chun, I don't know as it appears that the on-line shops don't carry it. If some have it, I haven't seen it. You might check with Charlest or Robb as they might be able to advise you. One pro shop where I live that carries L/L Balls has it, but that is the only place I've seen it.

It does have a very distinct smell that remains with the ball almost like a Storm ball.  It seemed to do a pretty good job of cleaning.

Chun,
Call Legends (1-888-526-3645) and ask for Theresa ... she takes care of those orders; their website (  http://www.lanemastersbowling.com  )
has a list under Products/Accessories and what is available and in what sizes.

hi gfh,

other than the smell, which is better than the original, i believe
that the legends cleaner is one of the best, if not the best.
in not only "deep cleans", but also takes off belt marks and other
grime and dirt.

regarding clean n' dull, the residue that is left on the ball needs
to be wiped off with a wet towel or rag.  this simple process removes
the residue, but doesn't affect the balls "new" tackiness and reaction.
if i'm not mistaken, it also explains this process in the "directions
for use" on the back of the container.

hope this helps.

Added, very worrisome note:

I was working around my workbench this evening; nearby I have a wooden stool with a protective polyurethane coating, as per usual. I spilled some Legends cleaner on the stool. It dissolved the hardened polyurethane coating right down to the wood.

I guess I'll use up what I have; bought quite a few Lanemasters balls, but I don't think I'll buy any new stuff. Heck, only denatured ethyl alcohol and pure acetone had that effect and both are illegal!!!

So, I'm a little concerned.

I don't know if the cleaner is better smelling, but the orignal would gag a magot, I was given some sample bottles and they left a smell in my bowling bag, so bad that I had to leave it outside the shop for a few days. The stuff cleaned great, but no way would I keep it around the shop.

Now you are starting to worry me Jeff.  I love L/LL cleaner.

The new stuff is grape smelling.  The old stuff was putrid.

Will it hurts the ball ?

Yeah I read that it could harm other plastic surfaces.  It dulled my epic so much that I have been checking to see if it dried it to the point that it might crack if that is possible.  But it hasn't and I haven't thrown it yet to see if the reaction is back to normal.

I doubt it.

Acetone itself won't hurt a ball unless you let it sit there and soak in, but that's not the purpose 99.99% of us use it for. We want a clean ball; so we put it on and wipe the dirt off as quickly as we can. If we treat balls with the Legends cleaner that way, I sincerely doubt it will hurt the ball.

Oddly, neither it nor Brunswick's Remove-All cleaner is anywhere on the USBC approved list.
