What is the advantage of two piece bowling ball?
« on: January 27, 2016, 12:22:21 PM »
Lane Masters have two piece bowling balls (cover and core without filler).
What are the advantages of balls without filler like the other company's balls.

Less labor involved in making them.

less cracking as well so they'll last a lot longer!

IMO the reactive coverstocks in todays balls are sponges therefore the larger the sponge the more oil it can soak up before becoming saturated. The "filler" won't soak up the oil. Coverstock is also the more expensive material in the ball so thin coverstock balls are cheaper to produce from a material cost.

I have had at least five balls crack a long way or the whole way around the ball. All have been thinner coverstock balls with the filler material. I have never had a true two piece ball crack in that way.

I'm not an expert and I could be wrong. But with my LM 2 piece balls, they seem to carry better on light hits vs. the other big name companies in my bag. And they just seem to have "heavier" hits....

I have had true two-piece balls crack, although not completely around the ball like a ball with filler does.

Thank you for all your replies.

The reason I asked this question was that the Lane #1 staff once told me that they are using more expensive filler for their bowling balls. I don't know if they is such thing.

My experience with two piece bowling ball... I too feel that carry is better overall.
I didn't think about the light hit though.

Just one more question... does pin out drilling gets better carry since it hooks more at backend?

The drilling that YOU can get flush to the pocket and drive through the pins to exit the deck between the 8 and 9 pins gets better carry. Pin in, pin out, Rico, doesn't matter what the drilling is as much as what YOU can do with it.

Well there you go. I knew that there was some reason why they are that much more expensive than everyone else. They put superior materials in the least important part of a ball. When everyone else is putting cheap filler material into their balls to save money on production costs they are using really expensive stuff. I'm not buying that any day of the week.  Or, the hype.

Urethane and filler are what they are...no such thing as more expensive
Layouts create flare....the bowler creates motion

I think putting Lane1 on the ball makes the filler more expensive, but isn't reference to quality.

I can't comment on who uses more expensive materials on/in bowling balls. But, I do know from 10 years experience, that a Lane 1 core will dull a bit. They seem "harder" or more "dense" compared to some of the cupcake cores and fillers I see from other companies (not all). I love the oversized Diamond core, but man them things will do a number on your bits over time.

Question is does Lane1 make the core? Since every aspect of any ball is made by other manufactures depending on who will deal with the company. I would imagine the core is made by that same manufacture that is pouring the balls at the time.

You cover most of the industry with who has made their product at one point in time and the only thing proprietary maybe the core design not any of the materials.

Which is why I'm not claiming to know anything the materials or their cost. I am just stating my experience in the last 10 years, which has been mainly 900G pours.

Just a FYI:

There's a BTM article called Bowling Balls: An In-Depth Overview A Guide to Bowling’s Most Important Piece of Equipment. (You don't have to subscribe to read the whole article)

That talks about some of this 2 piece etc.

http://www.bowlingthismonth.com/bowling-balls/

Excerpt:
Quote
Well, the answer is that most manufacturers have started enclosing their weight blocks in spherical “outer cores.” There are numerous reasons for this evolution, but two obvious ones are cost and flexibility. By introducing the outer core component, manufacturers are able to drastically reduce the amount of expensive coverstock material that is needed to produce a ball. Simultaneously, the addition of the outer core component gives the manufacturers one more degree of freedom when designing the ball’s dynamic properties. That is, they can now adjust the densities of the outer core and weight block up and down to achieve different RGs and differentials, all while using the exact same component geometries.
