Particle Pearl
« on: May 17, 2006, 09:23:44 AM »
Are any of the balls in the current lineups from L/LM particle pearls? Their websites don't really specify. From the pictures it looks like the New Standard may be but I am curious if anyone knows if any of them are pp's?

From the reaction shape chart, it'd be hard to believe it's a PP.  I know those are not set in stone, but if that's supposed to be "typical", meaning early, smooth, continuous for the NS, I can't see it being a PP.

Also, there are two NS here in town and while I can see how the colors might make you think pearlized, I don't think it is.

As far as I know there are no particle pearls in the line-up currently. The last one was a ball called The Answer. I think there were some production problems with it; so it was never a big seller.

The NS is NOT a pearl, as far as I know. When polsihed, it does have some reflective properties (maybe that's the diamonds?).

The Legends Masterpiece, although it is technically a resin pearl, seems to me to have all the ball path/ball reaction properties of many companies' polished particle pearls. Its reaction off the breakpoint is like a VERY strong hard arc-ing resin pearl (virtually flippy with some drillings), but its midlane handling is more akin to that of a particle pearl. It handles a surprising amount of oil for me, personally.

The Big Kahuna, probably due to its medium strong (solid low load particle) cover and low RG differential, seems to me to act more like many companies' sanded paricle pearls. Its breakpoint is, again, that of a very strong arc.

ns2 shined up will fit the bill, i have it and a polished big kahuna both with almost exact drillings. Both work well shined up and hit like mack trucks, for me the only ball i dont care for so far is the world class in there whole lineup. I picked up a guaranteed from allstar bowling cheap it rolls alot like new standard for less dough, same great hit and consistent breakpoint.

I get between 3-4 inch pins drill every ball pin over ring with no weight hole, so far it has made moving up and down with the legends/lane masters balls easy to figure out. I like these balls as much as my buzzsaw collection, i have recently had every old saw i have repaired from cracks and redrilled. The legends/lane master balls are the only series of balls that equal to the hitting power of my new/old buzzsaws. My guaranteed and green army bomb tonight were blowing the rack apart shot after shot, i had a hard time figuring out which hit harder. The ns/2 has been a very good so far when i have used it likes decent head oil and to be bellied on a 5-6 baord swing pattern. The Big Kahuna handles the carrydown better when polished than the ns/2 does more of a up the boards ball but still the same hit. Take it from a guy with about 250 old and newer balls there is no bad legends/lane masters ball. I have had a little success even with my least favorite the world class, if you would like to try a single drill i got in a trade its yours for 70.00 shipped paypal, pin is about an inch over ring dont know exact spans but around 4 7/16 area. The ball looks to have about 30-40 games at the most on it, very good shape but not perfect either some smaller wear marks on it.

I've been thinking of trying the Masterpiece. The reason I was asking about PP's is I'm thinking of retiring my Ace and was wondering if L/LM had a comparable replacement. My one concern about the Masterpiece is I fear that it may overlap my Action Packed.

I personally can't say as I have not tried an AP. Is your Ace similar to the AP, IF they have the same drilling?

The MP is a strong ball, much stronger than any resin pearl without either and asymmetric core or a particles. It handles oil on a level with solid resins and on a level with polished particle pearls,Mine has a 5 1/4" x 4" drill with no weight hole and I can't even think of using it on anything less than TRUE medium oil. I tried 2000 grit sanding and had to use it on long medium oil or medium-heavy oil. I have it at 4000 grit now and still can't cut down its "Left turn NOW, Clyde" abilities.

Drill it with a 4" pin to PAP and at or below the level of the fingers and it will, in my opinion, compare with well with many polished particle pearls. I can't, of course, guarantee how well you will do with it or what reaction you will see.
