Hornet results?
« on: March 05, 2007, 06:46:21 PM »
I am curious to hear about the length and mid lane reaction, being its 79 hardness.  I am curious to see if this is a long arc ball for crankers, when the shift gets tight, the oil gets thin and line moves deep....

Need a review guys...  let's hear it?

Compare the Buzz with it...

Drilled mine on Friday.
Three inch pin stacked over the ring finger.
The Hornet has a semi-plastic feel to it and  it skates through the heads like plastic.  Gets into a roll about 45 ft down the lane that is super predictable.
It does hit as hard as the other balls in the L/L family.
This ball is a true medium light to dry lane ball.
Anything more and you will have to slow it way down and you might as well roll the buzz.  I can also shoot at corner pins on a straight line with this ball.

robospare, have you shot on scorch with it yet?  Or third game on a pair with broken down back ends?

I am really curious. How did it react, what line did you play, lane conditions etc?

"HOG"
Pulled out my Hornet last night on a broken down pair for the third game.
After putting my Black Pearl away there was a major adjustment to be made.
Move from the third arrow over to the second.
The Hornet gets through the front and mid lane like plastic and is upon the break point in the blink of an eye.
I had to hit on the ball to get it to read the mid lane.
Ran into patches of slight carry down and she skated on me.
After six frames I went to my buzz and finished with no problem.
For the Hornet to work for me the condition needs to be very broken down with dry mid lane and backend with no carry down, otherwise the buzz will be what the doctor ordered.  No sure if I will keep the Hornet since my Buzz covers as much dry as I will usually see where I bowl.

I got with my Pro Shop and Galen on mine today, it's gonna look like this:

3 oz TW (NIB) with a 2 7/8" pin, OOB,
4 1/2 x 4 3/4 layout, pin above ring,
cg 3/16" above ML and on the GL, no WH

Hopefully, it'll fall below my BUZZ and above the Straight Flush(layouts below);
time will tell and so will I !!!

BUZZ: 3 3/8 oz TW, 2 3/4" pin, 4 x 4 1/4" layout,
pin right and above the ring, cg 9/16" above ML, OOB, no WH
     (1/16 finger wgt & 5/8 side wgt)

Straight
Flush: 3 oz TW, cg 3.5” off the PAP, 2” pin stacked above, 13/16" WH, OOB
WH located 2" past the PAP & on the ML (around 1/2 oz pos side weight)

Golly gee willickers ... this ball is STRONG and does hit hard !!! Durometer reading of 78-80 notwithstanding, this ball pearl reactive has backend power !!! I MAY have to hit the cover with some Extended Length polish and see what happens !!! More later ...

Added a coat of LEGENDS EXtended Length poloish, per Galen's recommendation after my first session with this BUZZ clone, and it's now right up there, FWIW and IMHO, and in the same class as the Black Pearl as an "L/LM" MUST HAVE !!!

The higher durometer rating gives it the neeeded push through to the backends where this versatile and VERY HARD HITTING ball does it's work; simple hand position changes will easily yield a different shot shape ... and that low-flare BUZZ core does the rest !!!

I LOVE THIS BALL !!!

Emailed Galen about this ball to get an idea on a pattern that would yield a similar reaction to my leverage drilled crimson executioner. He recommended a weak 5 x 5 drilling as if I drilled it to strong I may be fighting the backends.

Not sure exactly what he means by "fighting the backends", but is the ball really that strong ?

thanks

All I can say Dale is that you know and I know a stacked leverage Crimson Executioner is NOT a weak ball.  Length and flip for me........lil less than a G-3 or Greenie.  Is that how you see it?

As Stone Cold Steve Austin says, "Oh, HELL yes" !!! Yup ... it's THAT strong on the backend ... here's my reference info:

I'm a stroker;  245-250 rpms off my hand, 17 mph ball speed, axis rotation is 75-80 degrees, axis tilt is 15-20 degrees, and my PAP is 4 3/4 and 1/2 up (these are a guideline ONLY cuz I haven't had them done since the Spring of 2005).

HORNET: 3 oz TW (NIB) and 2 7/8" pin,
       4 1/2 x 4 5/8 layout (pin above ring),
cg 3/16" above ML and on the GL, no WH,
OOB cover and Extended Length polish,
Static wgts: 1/8 oz side wgt and 1/16 oz thumb wgt

Seems to be about two or three boards weaker than my Big R Bang:
Big R Bang: 3 oz TW(NIB), 2 3/4" pin, 3 x 3 1/2 layout,
(pin above & right of pin, on the edge of ring finger hole @ 2 o'clock),
cg 3/8" above midline, no WH,
4000 abralon and Factory Finish polished

I agree Scott that the Crimson is not a weak ball, I get the same reaction as you.

I would normally leave the ball as box. But a 5 x 5 drilling means that the ball is way stronger than any other pearl I have seen lately (except maybe my bronze centaur). From people's comments this appears to be the case, and to get it where I want it (under my bronze centaur and above my blue green centaur) I will need to drill it on the weak side.

This is my first foray into LM/L pearls so I am not sure what to expect. If this performs to expectations I may get myself a black pearl next.

Dale,

I'd ask charlest, but I think he is at USBC Natl's right now.

He has used both the Blue/Green Centaur and has a Hornet.

Word of warning to the wise ... DON'T drill it too strong or you WILL fight the backends with this ball; even though the durometer reading is higher, this BUZZ core WILL backend on you. (I had to hit mine with Extended Length polish and my layout is:

- 4 1/2 x 4 5/8 layout, pin above ring,
cg 3/16" above ML and on the GL, no WH,
OOB cover with Extended Length polish,
(1/8 oz side wgt and 1/16 oz thumb wgt)
