weight of L/LM's core
« on: November 18, 2006, 03:13:00 AM »
Read form L/LM's website, they put 11.5lbs resin on Big Bang.
The weight of the core for 15lbs ball only have 3.5 lbs ?
Is that too light ?

Aren't all the core of L/LM have similar weight ?

I do not believe anyone would know that unless they were a ball designer.
Why not just call Lanemasters and ask them?

On a side note: what difference do you believe it makes?

As the core's weight is light compare with the coverstock.
Can it take over the ball reaction.

Based on what I've seen of their balls' reaction over the past 3 years, and what most people here have said, the answer must be a resounding: NO!

On the other hand, have you ever asked, since Brunswick's coverstock are so very thin, now roughly 5/8" thick, have you ever asked if the core has taken over their balls' reacions?

I'd assume that you haven't. So why then worry about Lanemasters's balls?

I've also owned 4 L/LM balls which is guaranted, yeah baby , masterpiece & straight flush.

Other than the SF..,.all hits very hard. And excellent pin carry.

Just thinking if they put filter between, and make a bigger core.
Would it be better or worst.

I think I'd leave that decision up to the ball designers. But given their balls' hitting power, I think they made the right decision to go with premium thick coverstocks and their current cores.

While we, the bowlers, can decide we like the ball's overall effectiveness, what the balance will be between cover and core is not ours to decide, UNLESs we also have the chemical and physics knowledge base. I brought up the Brunswick factor intentionally, because their designers seem to have gone the opposite direction with, for me personally, equally good results. It is probably my 2nd favorite, that is, most successful, ball manufacturer that I use. Yet their coverstock are incredibly thin, relative to Legends.

The above are all reasons why I constantly tell people not to base ball buying decisions totally on core specifications. It's easy because that's the only place we see concrete numbers. There are no numbers we can use to evaluate coverstocks. However, the bottom line is we can only evaluate a drilled ball in its entirety; we cannot make individual evaluations about the core or the coverstock, only their combination.

L/LM's balls really impress me alot.

On the other hand, i always have good result from Low RG balls.

If i can have a ball with the hitting power of legnes/lm, and a low RG.
It must be amazing.

Chun, forget about the weight of the L/LM cores. I too once questioned these balls when I found out that they reduce the weight of the ball by reducing the weight of the core. The reason was because I throw 14# balls which makes the core 1# lighter yet. I hesitated for months about buying one because of this. Finally after talking to Galen and with my fingers crossed, I nervously bought my first 2 L/LM balls and all I can say is.....WOW..... I've never had such great pin carry prior to now. My 14# balls carry every bit as well as any 15# I have ever had. To sum it up, just get the ball for the condition you want and forget about core weight as I guarantee you that ball will give you excellent pin carry.

But Legends won't be making that ball anytime soon unless they change their policy of having 100% of their coverstock's resin going all the way to the actual core or their resin supplier develops a new resin with a different density. That is always possible, I suppose.

Philosophy: ()
At the risk of repeating myself, may I remind you, politely and sincerely, of one of my favorite bowling ball truisms -

You can't separate the coverstock from the core. The ball is the ball. It may consist of 2+ parts: core + coverstock (and for some companies, filler between them), but the interaction between them enforces the concept of
"The whole is greater than the sum of the parts."

This is never more true in bowling than the ball itself. This is, in part, why the matching of cover to core is so very important and is a major factor in the creation of a successful ball.
