It's not straightforward at all.  Quick-and-dirty is that speed off the hand is roughly 2-3mph faster than the speed at the deck, which is what many scoring systems give you.

You could measure the time it takes from release to impact with the head pin, divide by 60'.  That gives an average speed over the length of the lane, which is not necessarily the best number.

60' is also not necessarily the distance the ball travels.  It'll be pretty darn close if you are one of those "just roll it up the 10-board" types, less accurate if you're one of those 25-to-5 types.

Use a stop watch to check the time it takes from release to the head pin. Try several times to get a more accurate average of times. Divide 40.91 by the time it took and it will equal the total MPH.

I did not know the speed was figured at the pin deck and here I thought I was rolling the ball really slow

So what everyone is saying that if my ball speed according to the speed reader in the house I bowl in says 15.3-15.6 consistently that is the speed my ball is rolling at the pin deck?

which mean's my speed at release is around 17-18 MPH is this correct.

Man I thought I was way slow but now I guess not

No wander my friend can not get anything to move on the lanes his ball speed according to the speed readers is consistenly at 21.somthing MPH which by what you are all saying his release speed is at 23-24 MPH

The ladies MPH was measured by the CATS system. It is a lot more accurate due to the number of sensors down the lane.

So what about on televised bowling? I remember watching the Women's Open and Liz was getting her ball speed into the 19-20 mph zone. Is that measured off the hand or at the pin deck??
