What ball should I get?
« on: April 28, 2014, 12:30:09 AM »
I am a stroker and I have a 14lb hammer vibe and throw around 15mph with a 160-165 average. I am looking to get a 15lb Lord Field ball and I was wondering what balls would be best for me. Or is there a different ball make and ball that would be best.

Are you sure that you want to get a 15lbs? Getting 15lbs will reduce you speed by about 1 mph(pros are normally throwing around 16mph or more) and possibly reduce your revs, or You just want a ball that is heavier to complement your ball for oily lanes. You can use http://stormbowling.com/matchmaker
to help you, but all companies basically divide their balls to high performance(heavy oil and big flare), med perf(med oil and med flare), and low perf(light oil and low flare)
High Perf : $$$(expensive)
Med Perf : $$
Low Perf : $
Good Luck ;D

Going up in weight doesn't always mean you'll lose speed. I've seen guys that were using 14lb and was always trying not to over throw the ball so their speed suffered. I went back up to 15lb and my speed went up and so did a friend of mine who went back up. The heavier ball can make the swing better and not always hurt you! Just my $.02, Bruce

Well, 18 mph and a stroker, you definitely want to get one of those high performance babies and perhaps 15 lbs will help you more. If what Bruce saying is true, you might bump up your speed and there is no harm in that, just remember to keep your balance so that you do not end up like Eugene McCune who seems unable to pose after his shot most of the time. ;)

welcome to BR...

There are many balls to choose from, but with your average, along with a NIB (since you're moving up in weight) it'll be a good idea to invest in a coach too if there is one near you. Any ball in the mid to entry level ball will do...why???

When I returned to bowling over 12 yrs ago I started at about 165 ave. I bought a $225 and I really didn't know much about it. Though I jumped 20-25 pins more the next season, I also invested in a coach at the same time. But what I had learned later, I could of bought a cheaper or even a used ball and prolly did the same thing...

Does a round object have sides? I say yes, pizza has triangles..

BTW, not trying to knock you...but for that speed, you either are running to the foul line or putting a lot of muscle on that pill....

Storm Sync, Columbia Crazy Antics, Brunswick Mastermind Genius, Ebonite Pivot, Motiv Raptor Talon, Track LX-16.
Make sure they are drilled stack leverage(pin and cg 3 3/8 inches from your PAP) to get the most strongest ball reaction, you can keep they surface shined to make this ball more all around, but keep the sanding at around ~600 grit prior to shining

To answer your question, with the edited 18mph ball speed - Lord Field Get Some. Once you fall in love with that ball, the Judgement is a good compliment for when the Get Some is hooking too much.

DO NOT DRILL any of those balls that strong, you are asking for a ball that will "flare out" and you'll have a POS ball.

if you have a vibe now and are A going up in weight and B wanting a more aggresive ball i wouldnt actually start off with i high perfromance ball (granted having thrown nearly all the vibes knowing there capablility) instead look at a mid lvl ball something along the lines of things like the venom line (motiv), meanstreak (brunswick) or things along that mid price lvl. Ok ive seen the type of question asked in one form or another but to be totally honest, your not going to see a massive avg jump going entry to high lvl and jumping weight but may see the opposite do to the fact that its going to be alot more sensitive to your game and alot less forgiving. also dont be afraid of getting the advise of a local proshop someone who has watched you more that just a short video and no actual knowledge of your game and what your shot isike. take it how ya want but i dont see the point of selling a high end ball to a bowler that would possibly find greater result working and crafting their game into needing high end ball rather that jumping into a ball that in some cases could burn out before they can reach the capability of the ball thats all

My suggestion would be to stick to something with a symetrical core. If you're just looking to move up in weight from a vibe and are happy with its performance in terms of oil handling ability, like others have said, you don't need a top of the line ball. Anyone that's made a suggestion of a specific ball or layout is absolutely wrong for not asking for more information. That's like saying I need a vehicle to drive to work without understanding if you need to carry passengers or cargo or value fuel economy, a motorcycle and a monster truck will both get you to work, but obviously are best in different cases. We need to understand how much oil you're looking to handle with this new ball. That in turn with the ball chosen and your positive access point (PAP) will lead you to the best drilling.

If you can give us an idea of the oil you're looking to handle, we can recommend a ball. Your driller can measure your PAP and with some knowledge of the pattern being laid down and your game likely make the most accurate layout suggestions. If you can provide your PAP then others can make some recommendations on layouts.
