Finger Grips
« on: October 07, 2005, 01:36:57 AM »
I have used them since I started bowling. I used to use the ones with "lifts" until about 6 yrs ago, then I went to ovals. I liked them alot better. I am running into a problem with them, however. I have really oval fingers, almost flat, and the problem I am running into, the size oval that fits the sides of the finger, is way to large for the pads. So when I put my fingers in, there is a ton of room between the nail and the top of the grip. This is causing bleeding underneath the nail occasionally. If I go with a smaller grip, I can't get my finger in it. Any suggestions?

While there is a problem I doubt the bleeding under the nail is due to the grips but more than likely due to the pitch of the hole.  When you put your fingers in does your pad sit flush against the front of the hole without the back of the nail touching the back of the hole.  Usually bleeding under nail is caused my too much forward or not enough reverse and a lack of flexibility.  Your oval finger and grip problems i would suggest having custom oval fingers drilled and get rid of the grips.  Either that or you can try putting shims behind the back of the grip(or perhaps the front) to get it to snug up to your finger.  A lot of people I know use shims to make holes slightly smaller you could try it and see how it feels.

Vise Vaccu-Inserts.  They will allow you to use a smaller insert, maybe 2 sizes smaller, and still get in the ball with no discomfort at all.

I had a problem with my fingers getting a burning sensation on them.  I went to Vaccu's and no more issues.

FYI, I am now using inserts that are 2 sizes smaller than the ones I was using before Vaccu's.

Powerlift Ovals that seem to be wider from side to side but not so big from front to back are 10th frame.

Well, I thought it might be a pitch issue as well, but I never had this problem before. The ovals used to fit snuggly from side to side and front to back. I have lost a little bit of weight because of my blood pressure medicine, so the grips fit fine side to side but not front to back. The end of my nail is pushed to the front wall while the the top of the nail has no support because they are too big in that area. I could adjust pitch, but I didn't want to have to resort to that.

I am with JPR on this one.  I had somewhat of the same issue (minus the bleeding).  My driller suggested going to oval finger holes with no grips.  What a difference!  I don't see myself ever using grips again.  We drill my holes slightly larger and I put tape in the top (nail side) of the hole to snug them up a bit.  This gives me the ability to take tape out and open them up a if I swell too much, which usually happens at tournaments and when it is overly humid.

Another thing you may want to check is your span.  If it is a little long, I have found it puts extra pressure on my fingernails.  That is something else you may want to have checked.

I used to use these, but they hurt my fingers after bowling a few games.

A solution, possibly. They have at vise grips a "oval blend" grip. I could flip it around and that would give me the support towards the nail that I need.

Djarum,

I would have your finger pitch and span checked at a good pro shop.  It sounds like your current finger pitch is putting too much pressure on your finger nail.  I can't be certain about that.

The first place you lose weight is in your hands, have your span checked. You are long if the back of your nail is hitting the ball.

Not necessarily true.  You can have the same result with the correct spans if the finger joints are extremely inflexible and the proper amount of reverse pitch isn't used.  --  JohnP
