Cupped Wrist Help
« on: February 11, 2009, 10:43:17 PM »
Hey Bowling Folks,

I've been trying to work on cupping my wrist when I need a ball to pick up sooner, and I'm having trouble with it.  I don't know exactly what's going wrong, but it feels like the ball "sticks" to my thumb and the release is very sloppy.  I've had shades of nice throws, and I know that this technique does what I want it to, but I'm not sure how to make it consistent.  Any wrist cuppers here have sage advice?

Thanks!

I've noticed that when people try to add cup that they aren't necessary used to they unknowingly break down their wrist too early which will sometimes cause the back of the thumb to stick.

Now that's an interesting thought.  I should try to get some video of myself to make sure I'm staying cupped throughout.  I plan on practicing tonight, so I'm going to definitely keep that in mind.  Thanks for the heads-up there.

When I cup my wrist I have to focus on completely relaxing my thumb during my set up, and then focus on keeping it relaxed throughout my swing.  I'm not sure why I want to grip it when I cup my wrist, but if I really focus the ball comes off clean and with the added revs I'm looking for.

When I cup my wrist for extra revs (normally, I hold it straight) I find that I tend to come around the ball a lot, so that the extra revs are paired with more side rotation - it seems as if I cannot keep my hand behind the ball when I try this release.
That said, maybe there is an additional influence in your delivery that makes you hold onto the ball, e. g. a bent upper body, or another timing issue.

Another idea: a local player (and trainer) once told me that changing the wrist position can have effect on the timing, because the point where the thumb exits the ball (or should do so) during the swing changes. My suggestion would be to try to start your pendulum a tad earlier than usual - the idea is to have the ball back into your normal timing, despite the slight release point change.

That's a good call dizzy.  I'm going to make it point to practice my timing when I work on my cupped wrist.

Thanks for all the input guys!

When I am cupping my wrist I like to try and make sure to feel my thumb nail on the back of the hole. This helps me keep my thumb straight and provides a much smoother release. At least for me.
