I've been bowling better than I ever have in my life, but...
« on: February 06, 2017, 04:48:24 PM »
I have started tracking over my thumb hole. I've been trying to become smoother and have a more consistent release. Muscle the ball a lot less. I'm my quest to roll the ball instead of throwing it, I have stopped turning my hand at release. Just letting the release feel natural for me. This is why I have started tracking over my thumb hole. I was already a high track player to start with. I have been averaging 20-30 pins higher per game. (185ish - probably 210 or so)  Now this is probably going to sound like a stupid question, but is there another way to lower my track without consciously turning the ball at the end of my release? I feel like I am overturning the ball, but that could just be because of fighting muscle memory. And that still has the track being very high. Is it worth trying to fix the track if I am bowling better than I ever have?

If you are rolling over your thumb, it is probably just the first 1 or 2 revolutions.  After that, the ball will flare away from the thumb, so I wouldn't really worry about it.

If you are truly trying to perfect it, perhaps a very minor thumb pitch change can achieve the desired affect.  But I am not sure how much it would change with it.

OK next question and this may sound like I am insane, but is it possible that only one of my balls tracks over the thumb hole before it flares off? I don't hear it on the rest of my equipment, but I never really looked to see either

Are you sure you're tracking over the thumb hole, or could it be the middle finger hole?  If you're a high tracker, the combination of the high track and a low pin position can cause the track to flare into the MF hole.  --  JohnP

100% certain. I looked at the track. I hear it hitting the thumb hole in the heads and early mid lane. When it flares, it stops hitting the thumb hole

I have developed a more up the back, low tilt (almost no tilt) release over the past year. My track went from being low/spinner 5 years or so ago to medium (while 2 handed and after switching back to one hand), to now pretty high. 3.5" or so over PAP to 4-4.5", and now 5.25" over.

For me, I also have more issue with tracking over the thumb than fingers. I have found that I need to stay away from pins left of the ring finger, if below fingers (I'm right handed), and left of the middle finger, if above the fingers. I have not tried going more than an inch or so below the fingers either.

To sum up, yes, the drilling can definitely affect your chances of rolling over the fingers and/or thumb.

How does the drilling affect the initial roll of a ball over either the fingers or thumb?  Are you saying the ball changes roll in mid-air and rolls over the fingers or thumb, or the ball flares over the fingers and thumb?

The OP is having a ball roll over the thumb immediately after he releases it.  This insinuates there is either something with the way he is releasing this particular ball or perhaps something different with his fit that causes him to release it differently.

I would double check the pitches and span to see if they are the same as the other balls he is throwing.

He never said it tracked the thumb as soon as it released off his hand, you did. He said he heard thumping in the heads and early mid-lane. So no, not in the air.

I simply answered this thread based on what he said, not made up conclusions of others.
