I know I've seen this asked here before, but I can't locate it. Which ball companies use their premium cores in their 13 lb balls? I know that most of them only use these cores in their heavier balls, i.e. 14, 15, and 16 lb balls, which then leaves the performance of their 13 lb balls really dependent on the coverstock. Thanks.

It varies from company to company and ball to ball. That information is usually on the website for a particular ball. Brunswick seems to make a lot of 13# balls with the same core as the heavier weights. Storm is hit-and-miss, sometimes they use lighter weight cores for lighter balls. Track usually uses a different core for 12-13# balls, but it is a "real" core, the same one used in the Crunch Time, Slash, and Solutions. Some Lane 1 balls are available in 13#, some aren't. I can't see Lane 1 using a different core for lighter balls, they seem to simply not make them in that case.

In the end, you have to look at the specific ball you're interested in to find out for sure.

I'm the one that asked the question before

...I've done my homework on 13lb balls as well...I've Emailed a few companies and this is what they said:

Storm uses the Super Sport core.
Hammer uses the Diesel Core.
Dyno-Thane just said they use a very lighter weight material and different core shape.
Brunswick keeps the same core shape but changes the material size of it.
Ebonite use a totally different core.
Rotogrip does the same as Dyno-Thane (see above).
MoRich uses the same core shape AND size but uses a lighter weight material.
Visionary uses the SAME CORE USED IN 14-16lb BALLS !

Lane one uses the same core whether it is 13# ball or 16# ball.
Shelley is correct in saying lane one only offers some of there balls in 13pounds.

i wouldn't stray from brunswick just because the core isn't exactly the same. my wife throws 13lbs and she's had a couple brunswicks, and i can tell you that the reaction she got from them has always been the same as advertised, and the same reaction that say i get with 15lb stuff. i think that's the main goal, as far as the company is concerned, is to have it be the same reaction/ball characteristics in all weights, whether the core is the same or not.

Actually Storm's Master Line 13lb balls use the same cores in heavier ones. But the densities of the material are somewhat altered, so that the RG and differential would come close to the heavier ones.

Brunswick 13lb balls use the same core as 14lb to 16lb ones. But in the spec sheets you can see that the RG would be significantly higher.

For Dyno-thane 13lb balls, they can't use the original cores because their covers are usually quite thick. The cover itself weighs around 10lb to 11lb and so you can imagine the RG in their 13lb balls!

In my opinion, when choosing 13lb balls, you should not mind the shape of the core. It's the RG and differential that matter. Even if a 13lb ball contains an original state-of-the-art core it won't be reacting like a 14lb one. In general the 13lb balls have higher RGs than heavier ones. So what you have to do is to look at the actual spec sheets of these light weight balls and choose one that has its numbers closer to the 14lb ones.
