I went from 16 # to 14 # this year, partially because of a hip replacement and the rest just due to age. Amazingly, the 14 # is doing great. I'm averaging over 200 and see very little decrease in hitting power. Ssurprised me! -- JohnP

I went from 16 to 14 this year. The carry is very good, but it is not a fair comparison as I have greatly increased my rev rate. However, I can't rev a 16 lb ball and get it near the target, so maybe it's fair to compare after all!

During last season I was diagnosed with degenerative meniscus in both knees, a slight tear in the right knee, bursitus in the left knee, and tendonitis in the right elbow. Great combo for a righty

Bowling was painful, but the day after was excruciating. During one session, Bruce Heim (driller from the ABC Nationals) told me to stop in the shop the next day. When I stopped in he said to throw this tonite (it was a used (his)) Monster ScreamR that he had set up for me. I thought what the heck, although I knew it was lighter than what I was used to, and a slightly different grip, I shot 634 that nite, and 668 the following nite with it.
It was part way into the 2nd nite when Bruce advised me that the ball was 14lbs!
I since have changed all my equipment over. (unfortunately a few old favorites could not be replaced).
My speed and revs are up, control and accuracy improved (especially after 5 or 6 games) and most importantly I am bowling pain free
Come to find out that there are a few TOP bowlers here that do throw 14's.

I bought a 14-lb Reloaded as an (expensive) experiment. Sometimes I throw it too hard for my miniscule rev rate and leave 5-7s or plain 5s. I do get more rotation on the ball when thrown at the proper speed, and it feels very comfortable. If I keep my speed down to match my rev rate, it's okay, but I leave lots of corners. I think I'm going to stay with light 15 pounders for future purchases.

Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention that I shot 688 last night with my 14 pounder (AZO Accurate Red Fire). Only one open frame, and that was a 6 - 7 split that I just missed, on the right. -- JohnP

Billy, I can only speak from my own experiences, but leaving 5s and 5-7s means that your ball is deflecting after it hits the head pin and not driving through the pins (weak ball). I leave 5s and 5-7s with heavier equipment as well, but maybe only once in a 3-game series. With lighter equipment, I leave one each game. In my case, it's definitely the speed with which I throw the lighter equipment because when I decelerate, the ball reacts better.
I'm confident that one of the better bowlers on this forum can expand further on the causes of flat leaves.
