14lb and 15lb?
« on: November 13, 2008, 12:37:10 AM »
Is there really a big difference in hitting power and carry between these 2 weights?

I wouldn't say it is any better or worse as far as carry. But i will say that i have tried to use lighter equipment and it was harder for me to keep consistent with speed and release due to the loss in weight.

The main differance that messed with me was the feel on the approach. At 1st it was fine, but I think I let it get to my head and it started screwing up my timing. It basically felt like I couldnt walk right. If I threw the ball good, the 14 still knocked all 10 down with ease though.

for me i downgraded from 15lb to 14lb due to the fact i had a lay off due to injuries

hit wise its the same for me as nothing changes in my game except for ball weight and i can last more games with a lighter ball

of cos with a lighter ball i learnt what is a free arm swing all about

well on side note in fact i find more messengers for me with a 14lb than 15lb probably cos of the fact the 15lb cos a harder impact thus leavign a tad too many corner pins for me

no loss in carry here!  i predominately threw 16lbs.  went to 14 when i started having wrist problems.  my wrist is better now. and had great success throwing the 14lber that i havent changed.  not to mention most 14lbers have a higher RG which helps me out alot.  dont hate on the 14's, they're every bit as good as the heavy boys.

The biggest thing you have to worry about is the loss of core numbers when going away from a 15lb. However those dont stay the same after drilling anyway.

I used solely 16lb up until this year because I hurt my shoulder toward the end of last season. I picked up a bunch of used 15lb over summer. I recently got a 14lb Fury Pearl TE and shot my best series of the year 741. It hit just as well, high hits seem to leave only the 4 pin and I did seem to get a few more 4 pin trips. I feel kinda foolish using 16lb for the last 10 years. I could have saved myself alot of wear and tear.

Drilled up a 14lb U Turn particle pearl the other night, it might feel a little different but like my 14lb Phenom Unleashed it still smacks the pins(espec seeing this U turn was nib and not one of those 2nd drill oldies i pick up every now and then)

With 14#, you may find that you carry some hits differently due to deflection.  A light hit that just barely carried the 5-pin with a 15# or 16# ball might not do that anymore because the 14# deflects more.  But a high hit that left a 9-pin with 15-16# might suddenly start carrying with a 14# ball, because of that increased deflection.

In the end, you will be more effective in the long run with a comfortable weight than with any particular weight.
