14lb Equipment?
« on: August 17, 2009, 02:58:19 AM »
I'm recovering from cronic Elbow tentonitis, and as part of long term rehabilitation I'm considering moving down from 15lb to 14lb equipment.

I know 1lb doesn't sound like a lot, but with the limited practice I've done with 14lbs, it does seem lighter in my hand through release. Surprisingly, in my brief practice sessions, I haven't found any noticable difference in carry. Unfortunately to date, I haven't been able to throw on anything but a fresh THS, so I don't know if I'm getting accurate feedback. I'm especially concerned about how carry will be affected on longer patterns with my medium revs.

I'm curious to hear from others who have tried to make the transition. I'm willing to go the pain of trading out a 15lb arsenal, but only if I'm convinced it makes sense to go through.

A few years back I had a 14 and 15 of the same ball sitting side by side. I accidentally grabbed the 14 and started drilling it. After I caught the error I decided to finish drilling it anyway. That week I threw a perfect game with the 14. Consequently, I'm of the opinion that if you are throwing it reasonably well most people won't notice much (if any) difference in carry.

Where you may see a difference is on the "less than good" releases, or on tougher and slicker oil patterns. I don't have any statistical data to back this up, just my personal observations. Good luck.

By the way, my spare ball has been a 14 for years now. I like the extra deflection I can get while picking up the 3-10 split.

I've been throwing 14's for over 5 years now due to Psoriatic Arthritis.. I've won tourneys, cashed in many Regionals and had multiple honor scores.. I only run into a problem when I see unussual carrydown that I can't create and entry angle. Then it is swish 7 and flat 10 time..

Overall I am able to bowl and I will sacrifice the few extra taps for the lack of pain...

I've used 14# for some customers who like to circle the lane.  I've seen carry % increase in that instance they like to create more entry angle and the 14's deflect just right.  Covers and cores are also so strong that more gross weight isn't necessary to knock over pins.  And if you look at some drill sheets you often get better RG and diff. numbers's in 14# cores.

Not every style will be able to easily make the switch to 14, bowlers with naturally faster speed will have a bigger adjustment to make, but I don't think it's necessary to have to struggle with 15's if you don't need to.

I too suffered through elbow tendonitis for more than a year.  Last season, I dropped from 15 to 14 and the difference is amazing!  Not in the pin action or carry...that was the same or even better than with the 15.  But the lack of pain and being able to roll six games a night without my arm feeling like it wants to fall off is wonderful!

I highly recommend dropping to 14!

I switched from 15's to 14 about 3 to 4 years ago because of wrist problems. Never had an honor score until I switched. Now I have 3 300's and 2 800's all with 14lbs. To me the carry is alot better and it seems alot easier to control.

a friend of mine not too long ago moved from 14 to 15 and they noticed quite a large difference in pin carry hits they would leave flat tens on or pocket 7 10s they would normally get at least one pin of the 7 10 out and often the 10 gets kicked out

I wonder if anyone goes down to 14 "just because" or at least some reason other than injury.  I might need to go to 14 for release reasons I can't really get under the ball during the swing, which kills some power.  A little more effortless ball speed might be useful too.

My release feels so easy with 14, at age 35 maybe more of them are in my future. Had the 14lb Phenom unleashed in my hand for most of tonight(thanks to getting the nasties with some other stuff and doing a wholesale arsenal change!!) and it felt effortless
