14lb vs 15lb
« on: June 25, 2010, 01:25:27 AM »
Thinking about making a drop from a 15lb to a 14lb. Anyone seen a noticeable difference in the way the ball reacts during contact to the pins? I'm afraid the 14 lb ball won't hit as hard and will deflect more. Help please

here is the thing SD
I have done this
went from 15 to 14 ( due to elbow injury )
I stayed at 14's for the better part of a year
this is what I found
at first, your timing will be messed up, and you will want to throw / roll the ball even harder and faster ( at least this is what I did ), and in so doing this it messed up my timing
by zooming the ball downlane I often went straight through the break point and would come in heavy w/ lots of crappy leaves i.e. deflection

when I got used to the lighter weight, and rolled the ball normally, what I found was increased accuracy, more revs, no arm pain, and outstanding carry.

what dictates carry ( most times ) is entry angle, what a lighter ball allows you to do is be able to control it more, thus being able to dictate entry angle.

when you can slow down, get the ball into it's proper roll, the drive and hit will be there, and as you continue to evolve w/ the lighter weight, you can manipulate your line to the pocket more easily.

I had no problems scoring w/ 14's, and I know several other who can shoot the light's out w/ the 14's

it's not for everybody, but it's at least worth a try if you are considering it.

I have since moved back up to 15, but I keep a couple 14's around just in case I have to revert back

The difference between 15lbs. and 16lbs. is minimal. However, the difference between 15lbs. and 14lbs. is far more noticeable. Unless you can routinely create a greater angle of entry, are a power player, or bowl on drier lanes, a 14lb. ball will not carry as well.

I have to argue on the carry aspect. I dropped from 15 to 14 about 4 years ago. Of my 11 300's, 7 are with 14Lb equipment. On 800's I and 2 and 2. If I am not mistaken, they did a test with I beleive Ann Marie Duggan where the took a 14/15/16 and drilled all three the same. Of the three balls, the 14 had the highest carry percentage an created the largest pocket. She liked the 16lber the best because she could slow it down in heavy oil. If I find the article in my back issues I will post as to which magazine and month/year it was. If anyone remebers which magazine, please post.

The last post is somewhat true, 16lb balls will always carry better though, it''s physics. However, moving down to 15 or 14 doesn''t change carry percentage enough to make a HUGE difference. The difference in pocket size between a 16 and 14 is less than an inch, so the 16 only gives slightly better carry. The ABC/WIBC did do a study, don''t know if Duggan was involved, but you might read this......

I remember an article in Bowlers Digest, a magazine which is now out of print, about ball weights some time ago. Bowling Digest was discussing this very subject with Rick Benoit, PBA tour rep for Brunswick at the time. He stated that appx. 75% of the players on tour use 15lb. equipment. There were still many who used 16lb. equipment.....or as it's called on tour, "man weight ". There were only a few who threw 14lb. equipment.

My friend is the dame way. Due injury he went down to 14 got his game
back. He's been pretty consistant. Shot his 800 with alsmost back to back 300 ten fre was the one that killed em lol. But yeah there was a difference. He's been working on his game really good.
