15 lb strike ball and 16 lb spare ball?
« on: November 30, 2004, 12:46:50 AM »
I recently returned to bowling this season. I just purchased
a faball nail to use on dry conditions and spares. I have no
new tech equip. but plan on purchasing a sling blade. I've
read that with the new tech balls there is no less hitting
power between a 15 and 16 lb ball as there was in the past.
Is this true? My reason for asking is: although I have no
problems with 16 lb balls, I'm thinking that a 15 lb ball will
enable me to have more control of ball speed and revs. However
would my 16 lb. nail seem too much a a change when using it
for dry lanes and spares?

Thanks for all input,
phil

I do it, and you will notice a difference.  If anything it would be more preferable to have the 15 lb's be for your drier shot since you would want a bit more speed.  Its always best to have everything weigh the same, but sometimes it's just not possible.  If you won't be using the Nail much I wouldn't worry about it, but be aware you will notice a difference.  It probably will throw your timing about a quarter or half a step, since it takes more time for the ball to come all the way back, and begin dropping forward.  Just practice a lot and know if something doesnt feel right that is probably what it is.

The difference between the hitting power / carry of 15lb -vs- 16lb equipment has been debated on here a few times.  I think a general rule of thumb is that a 15 will carry full pocket / high pocket hits better since it will deflect slightly.  I'm hoping there really isn't a difference as I'm in the process of dropping to 15lb equipment.

To answer your other question:  I wouldn't recommend throwing different weight equipment if you can help it.  I know of a few people that use a ligher spare ball, but for a main strike ball I could see swithing back and forth causing timing issues and delivery repeatability problems in the long run.

Goof, I have a 14.5 pound Buzzsaw Silver Diamond and not only does it carry full/high pocket well, it's best hit is thin - it simply blows pins off the deck on a shot where it's playable from outside.

If I had different wts. between my spare ball and my strike ball I'd rather the spare ball be the lighter - but I find myself in the same situation as Phil1776.  I got my spare ball when I had all 16's, now I have all 15's other than my XXXL (spare ball).  Anyone want to trade a used XXXL 15 for a used XXXL 16?  Or even a heavy 14?
