The other nite, a guy on the team we were bowling was having a rough time. Towards the end of the third game, he gets a lane and starts "practicing" in between his turn. People started bitching, and since I'm also the league secretary, I tried to find a rule about it. Couldn't find one. Obviously, I know you shouldn't do it, but as long as you are back on your lane when it's your turn, is there any USBC rule against it?

I've seen league with rules forbidding you to bowl on your pair just before league, with an eye towards getting an unfair advantage,

AND I've seen leagues with rules forbidding you to bowl anywhere but on your own pair, with an eye towards stopping you from screwing up someone else's pattern/lanes.

I can see both sides of that "fence". Maybe people should only practice on lanes outside their league's lanes???

IMO, as long as everyone can bowl on their lanes before competition if they so choose, it's fair. I suppose the league could make a rule prohibiting it, but then you'd run into the problem of bowlers practicing on lanes that will be used by other teams and affecting their pattern. I can't imagine a house allowing a league to prohibit all bowling on their lanes between oiling and start of league. -- JohnP

I really don't see what the big deal is about having a lane on the side, as long as you aren't slowing things down. I see it as a way to stay/get warmed up. Especially with a 5 man team format, I think it's important to find some kind of way to do that. You've already got to deal with 9 other people on your pair moving oil around. No reason to make it harder to make a good shot.

I had no idea that general league etiquette was that you could practice after the lanes are oiled. My center doesn't let you bowl on any of the league lanes after the 5:30 oiling...well, they aren't supposed to, anyway. Makes it kind of difficult to get there and warm up if league starts at 6:30.

I said it a little different "The Centers responsibility .. ".. I was under the impression it was EXPECTED that Centers would oil the lanes for leagues .. there are exception that I know of .. 1. Seniors (and probable juniors); 2 late leagues (one following an early league). I've heard of tournaments where bowlers on the second shift were very angry that the lanes were not oiled before they bowl.

I never heard of a rule where you couldn't bowl on lanes just before your league but I have always heard that the Center would save the shot for the league! It maybe PICKY but I hate to come into a league and find someone bowling on my pair before I start ..I bring balls for a particular shot (most times they don't work

) but I don't want to be disappointed because someone picked my pair to practice on!

I dont see this to be advantage...

Bowling takes energy and if he is bowling 2 games at the same time he is spending twice the amount of energy.. I dont see a reason to make a rule for this situation...

I am a association secy and league secy

I don't think there is a USBC rule but a 300 game is 12 strikes, so how can you practice while bowling

league, I would not allow it would not be 12 thrown balls in league per say

and where I bowl league we allow bowlers to bowl before league starts and they bowl on lanes

that there team is on but of 16 teams maybe 1 or 2 bowlers bowl 1 game to warm up

as league gets 10 minutes practice and 10 bowlers you may get 4 balls maybe 5 or 6

if more strikes thrown.

I think your league better find a new secretary. A bowling score in competition is how many pins were knocked down on a single lane or a pair of lanes UNLESS a bowler had to be moved to another lane due to mechanical failure on his first lane or pair of lanes. What he or she does on any lane that is not his assigned lane matters not one bit. Don't make it complicated.

Holy crap! No wonder people have so much trouble with their game, they don't even know how many strikes makes up a perfect game. Let's spell it out, a strike in the first 9 frames and a possible 3 strikes in the tenth. Wow. Really? Really?

It's definitely bad form, but not against any USBC rules that I can find. The guy must be a can short of a 6-pack to try the stunt to begin with. No matter how you slice it and dice it, it's going to leave a bad taste with most of the other bowlers. People have long memories about this kind of stuff.

Admittedly, I give a lot of lessons, and to know that I am able to do this will help a lot for those that are unable to meet me at times when I have open availability.

However, I'm not talking about throwing full games while I'm bowling league. Just a shot or to to demonstrate a shot or technique.
