16# balls
« on: November 24, 2017, 06:13:59 PM »
Who is still throwing 16# equipment besides me? Seems one other guy and I are the only ones still throwing 16#ers in league play at our center. The pro shop doesn't even stock them anymore. Anyone?

I have one guy on my team still throwing 16 and he is 60yo. And no pro shop in the area here stocks 16lbs either.

I have so much respect for those who still can and still throw "man weight".

By necessity I have had to build up to throw 16# as its very hard to find some of the old urethane in 15 (then again early 40s so not that big of a deal).  My Sumo, my Blue Hammer and my Red Razor are all 16 (Cobra is 15.5).  Only 16 reactive I have is my Hy-Road pearl as I wanted to see if the bigger diff made a difference (doesn't really and carry isn't that much greater than my 15 Hy-Road either).  I have been told its a terrible idea to switch between 15 and 16 as it will fubar your timing but haven't had any problems so far.  Only fairly recently started to get consistent enough to have to worry about it though.

With the right delivery and proper fit throwing 16 can be as effortless as throwing 15. After a 2 to 3 year stint dropping down to 15 I have gone back to mainly 16lb balls. For the once a week league I bowl there is really no where and tear on my 61 year old body. I just feel I get better pin carry with my style of bowling.

As far as carry I still believe for reactives there is not that big of difference as I said even with my 2 piece Hy-Road Pearl (granted Hy-Roads hit a ton in 15 or 16).  For urethane there is a noticeable difference in better carry imo.  I willing to bet that is probably true for plastic as well but haven't thrown a 16 polyester myself.  That said if you are used to 16 certainly wouldn't go down until I had too.  Only ball in my arsenal I can't throw at all is a 14 plastic ball I am saving for when I get older.  I was using it as a spare ball but was muscling it way too much which doesn't make sense but with 16 I actually muscle less as I have to let gravity do more of the work.

I still throw 16.  For a while, I threw 15 but it was more of a feel thing for me.  I just felt that I can control 16 better and not muscle it.

Is has the opposite effect as well:  I can throw a 16 pounder, BUT  that extra lb just makes it hard for me to get into a proper swing for me with that extra lb.  As mentioned,  it’s all about feel and what weight is more comfortable and gives you better pin carry/ball movement/versatility.

Not to mention easier to control, and natural feel and swing throughout the shot.

I am 42 years old and still throw 16lb balls and will for a while now.  I tried 15 and had a hard transition and went back.  Being a heavier handed guy the 16lb equipment helps me from a numbers prospective as the balls are generally a little weaker at 16.

Yes, finding 16lb equipment can be challenging.  I am one of 5 people in my area that use 16.  The good thing is I can find some great deals online and even through my center.

64 years old and went back to thowing 16 this year after many years at 15 and a couple of attempts at 14.  Unlike most of you, I do think the carry is better with 16 lbs.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Good to know others throw 16# for same reason(s) as myself.
