I got another comment from my pro the other day about me throwing 16 pounders. Is it really that rare these days? And is there any solid evidence to support either weight over the other?

The general rule of thumb is, throw the heaviest weight you can comfortably throw. If you have no troubles throwing 16 and you don't have any noticeable fatigue, I don't see it as a problem. If you tried 15 and happened to carry better for some reason or another, that might be a reason to go down but that's it.
