I bowl in a 2nd shift league. Book average 201, with a rev rate anywhere between 350-400 rpm. For the first month of the season, the oil pattern has been really tricky for me. Anywhere 3rd arrow or right of that, reactive equipment hooks early and ALOT. If you play the middle of the lane, it tends to be a wet/dry situation, causing severe over/under. Last night I even tried using plastic up 10, with moderate success. I noticed that some of the straighter players are scoring higher this year (because the amount of friction is giving them more hook). Unfortunately because of my rev rate, this much friction causes me more harm than good. How do you guys attack conditions like this?

I would suggest a urethane ball.

I have a hard time with urethane on those type of conditions. Urethane (for me) tends to roll too early to be used on really beat up and dry heads.

If there is room to move really deep, then a strong pearl can work. For me, I have to force the reaction by making sure I get the ball into the dry and not try to play the line where the oil drops off.

If you don't like urethane - I would've considered going way right with something urethane, thinking that you could work the early hook-set kind of thing - I think you have the right idea with going inside with a strong pearl or maybe even a hybrid (my Frantic was always great in those situations). It's just a matter of how deep you'll have to get. If you are saying the burn starts as far in as 15, you may have to really get deep in order to give yourself enough push to get to that point at the break. It also depends upon how much bounce you get off of those dry boards. If it boomerangs off it like a bumper, you have more room. If the ball hits that burn and fizzles out, it gets dicey because then you're looking at super washouts and other designer splits if you get it too far into that dry. The key is to try to find a happy medium where you get a little bit of hold on the inside miss and a nice swish zone on the slight outside. You also need to keep in mind that a ball coming that strong that late will be ripe for leaving 7-pins, 8-pins, and pocket 7-10s.

At 350+ rpm, you should be able to get relatively deep, and still get around the oil. Unless you have a ton of speed, I don't see urethane really being an answer. The problem with urethane is that it still forces you to go away from the pocket on a broken down house shot, and your carry will be mediocre at best.

I hate house patterns for the reason you cite, but in my case I don't have the rev rate to carry when I have to get inside and go around the oil. I can hit the pocket all night and average 4 10 pins per game.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! As this pattern gets more and more beat up, I naturally try and chase it left (usually somewhere around the 4th arrow). The problem is, I feel like the extreme difference between the puddle in the middle and the sandpaper-like outer boards gives me very little miss room. If I miss a touch left, it skids and hits weak. If I get it too far right too soon from this angle, it does "fizzle" and it's washout city.

My weakest ball is a Karma Urethane (1000 grit+ polish) so I'm gonna try that out next week, andl see how that goes...

what balls are you using now? i would look at a tropical breeze. i dont bowl 2nd shift but its the lightest "medium" house pattern ive ever seen. by the 3rd game im playing 12-15 at the arrows with the breeze and it works great. still gets a bunch of length and recovers hard with all the dry outside. on anything else im a good 10 boards more outside with my feet with this ball. pretty sure its the weakest reactive on the market that doesnt have a pancake inside

I've been throwing all Brunswick stuff for the past several years, so here's my arsenal:

Brunswick Aura
Brunswick Alpha Max
Brunswick Versa Max
Brunswick Rattler
Brunswick Karma Urethane

80% of the time, I'm throwing the Versa Max. I like to keep my arsenal small, because I can usually find an adjustment that works. So far this year, this hasn't been the case. :-/

Versa Max would be my choice on the wet dry house shot. In fact I specifically drilled one for just the situation you are encountering. I subsequently replaced it with a Cobalt Vibe. Unfortunately a lot of the problem is with a persons roll pattern. I can bring 10 balls in, and when I get in where I have to go around the oil a bit too much, none of them will carry for me.
