Different Methods for shooting at 7 & 10 pins
« on: March 01, 2004, 08:16:25 PM »
My fiancee has really been struggling as of late shooting at both the 10 pin and the seven pin.  I bought her a plastic ball that she uses for these spares so she doesn't have to deal with the ball hooking.  My method for picking up these spares is to stand either far right for the 7 or far left for the 10 and throw between the 2nd and 3rd arrow.  I have pretty good results doing it this way but this method does not work for my fiancee.  I think that she would do much better moving in and throwing more over the middle of the lanes for these pins, but am not sure how to instruct her.  How to align her body?  What board to stand on?  What board to aim for?

I would appreciate hearing how all of you pick up your 7 and 10 pins.  Please only respond if you throw the ball straight at these pins as trying to hook the ball into these spares is not something that she wants to do.  Please provide as much detail about your approach as you can.

Thanks,
Alto

Alto, my method is similar to yours. For my 10's I stand on 38, target over 23 at the arrows. For my 7's, I stand on 10 and shoot over 13.

Alto, I have found my more success shooting from the middle at my sevens.  I stand with left foot at 20 and aim for 5th arrow.  As long as I don't pull the crap out of it, it works great for 4 pins too.  10 pins I shoot at the same as you, so no help there.

I use a similar method, but I cut down the angle a little bit.  For the 7, I stand at 15 and throw between the 4 and 5 arrows.  For the 10s, I stand I stand around 30 and throw between 2 and 3 arrows.  I open my shoulders pretty wide for the 10, too.

I have two methods...

1- I throw REALLY hard and hit it

2- I throw REALLY hard and miss it

Seriously

Can't help you with 7 pins as I hook into them.

I used to struggle with 10 pins until an older gentleman showed me the way.

I use a plastic ball.  Stand on 34 (using the inside edge of the left foot as a guide) and throw the ball diagonally across the 4th arrow.  The key for me is to keep my eyes on my target until I complete the shot.  I slow my shot down a little and do more of a lay down with no lift.
I have increased my conversion rate to more than 80 percent.  Last night I made 7 out of 7.  I have passed this method on to other women and it seems to work for them also.

Good luck

Nod brings up another question.  Do you alter your ball speed shooting at corner pins?  I find that I have the best results when I throw about the same speed or even a little slower than my strike ball.  If I try to throw it faster, I tend to get miss my target.  Since I have no problems throwing a ball straight, I can slow down my speed a bit and still not worry about the ball hooking.

Just to tell you more about my fiancee, she gets enough strikes per game to average 160 or higher but her spare shooting needs work.  Last night she threw all three games in the 140's despite having as many strikes as I did but I shot a low 500 series.  Her biggest problem spares are the 7 and 10 so if we can help her out with those I think she will gain a lot more confidence and that will allow her to enjoy the game much more

I start left foot on 30 ending left foot 26 target 15.
Depending on where on the approach she starts determine where she will start.

You can also use math to figure out any line to a pin.
For example my 10 pin:
takes a path of 4 boards per 15 feet which is  19 @ line, 15 @ arrows, 11 @ 30', 7 @ 45', 3 @ 60'.   I also incorporate a 4 board drift in my approach since I start 15' back from the line.

Hope this helps it is how I was taught to map out lines to single pin spares.

Edit  one other thing I do is stay dirrecly behind the ball I try and feel as though my pointer finger goes right over my target.
