2003 Bowling Ball cracked
« on: February 03, 2010, 04:32:59 AM »
A COMMENT:
I buy NEW bowling balls .. use them sometimes for 6 games and if they didn't live up to expectations I put them on a shelf.

I bought a NEW ONSLAUGHT back in '03. Didn't like it and rather then sell it .. put it on my ball rack in my office.

Today while cleaning up I looked at the ball and it was cracked all the way around the ball.

Tonight it goes in the garbage .. only sorry I didn't give it to someone who could have used it.

I had a ball I used a little and shelved, and also came back to it later (a year or so jut) and it had basically split in 2!

Kept it in a room temerature room in the house... must be ghosts bowling in the hallway!

Joe. You seem to have more balls crack than anyone else. I remember a post last year saying that you heard the last ball crack while you were in another room. You're just have to use them a little more.

I'll take some of those uncracked balls off your hands. They're just going to crack on you anyway

Bowlts .. Someone on BR said that a while back ..I have never tried it .. I do have about 20 of the plastic bags that came with new purchases .. I think I'll try it on some of the balls I will probable never look at again .. can't hurt and would be a good experiment! Thanks for reminding me!

I've been told that if you store them and don't plan to use them for awhile to put them back in the plastic bags they came in when they were new.  That helps prevent them from drying out so easily.  So I've been told......

If this is the case, then putting a humidifier in the room should have the same , if not better effect I would think.

Oddly for me the balls that have cracked on me have been dry lane balls.  Most recent was a V2 Dry.  Before that a Storm Hot something.  Before that a urethane ball I had polished and kept for the toast.

This is the first of my OLD BALLS (2003) to crack. All the others were less then 2 years old and believe it or not the manufacturer always replaced the balls. I think of the 6 that cracked this one and one other I just dumped .. Although I had some bad luck I've been very fortunate with the replacement policy .. especially with AMF ..

Ive also had 6 balls crack in half since 2004. The most recent was a brand new Passion 2 years ago. I only had 3 games on that ball. I also had it on my rack in a spare room. One thing I found out from a friend that had the same problem is, he was storing his in room temp. but near a window. Is your rack near a window or heating vent?

Another thing that probably promotes cracking on the shelf is simply the weight of the ball components and singular pressure. I had an XXcel crack on the shelf (well-temperated room) - I had not used for some weeks, it had been sitting in a cup all the time, untouched. I suppose that one factor had been lack of lane conditioner, that the material dried out, and that I had not moved the ball, or at least turned it around in its cup. The heavier core will surely "press" on the less dense filler below it, and I assume that this might, over time, cause tension between filler and coverstock. Then add the modern 0.5" covers, and the ball pops... Since then I frequently turn my arsenal around by 90° every 2 weeks, just for prevention!

I just wonder why an old-school Onslaught would crack? But maybe it had been sitting in the same position for long enough?

Dizzy .. you are absolutely RIGHT! The ball was sitting untouched for at least 2 years (perhaps longer). There was a time I would clean the balls every two months even if NOT used. BUT .. I got away from that a few years back ..what you say make sense.

A while back when we were talking about CRACKED balls one of the Pro Shop owners reported new/undrilled balls cracking on shelves! That was about the time I figured it's just a risk you have to take. I am going to try the plastic bag technique .. some how that seems to make sense ..

Some one else also talked about CURING .. I don't recall all the words but it had to do with the manufacturer and quality control.

Truth is that this probable has been going on for a LONG TIME! There aren't too many people who are BALL HOARDERS .. prior to the last 10 year every time I bought a NEW ball I'd get rid of the OLD one .. now ( I guess because of the price) I hold on to the oldies .. YES I should sell them .. just don't want to get involved!
