"Cleaner thru the heads"
« on: January 15, 2009, 12:07:03 PM »
I hear it all the time, and I dont really understand what it means. So exactly does it mean when people say the ball stays clean thru the heads?

The phrase refers to the ball getting through the front part of the lane without burning up or losing axis rotation. A ball that's clean through the front part of the lane usually has a pretty hard reaction on the backend.

If any of this is wrong, please correct me. I hope this helps!

I have a 5 1/2 to pap Pin Slasher goes 50 feet and covers all the boards the last 10 feet, that is clean through the heads and mids for that matter.

The head area is in so far critical since aggressive balls simply need the oil in the front part of the lane to make it though the mid lane area and the back end "alive" - in most cases, balls with matte finishes, rolly drillings or particle pieces need head oil to work properly. These are intended to work early, even though some modern coverstock formulations allow matte balls some good length and good response in the drier back parts of the lane.

A ball that goes "clean through the heads" is normally a piece that glides well in the (head) oil, to save energy for the back end (in most cases polished balls), but, as mentioned before, some pieces also have this "ability" due to their design.

One read would be for the ball to react(flip) in this area and roll on the backend, through the carrydown. (This is a biggie, folks)
