2013 UPS Shipping costs update for bowling balls.

Yes, I know everything is going up, except salaries; still this surprised me:

A few days ago and again this morning, I was shipping a couple of small items via UPS and I thought I'd check to see how much a 15 lb. ball (16 lb. total weight) would be for a couple of destinations.

From New Jersey to a friend in Arizona: $31.50!

From me in NJ to my driller about an hour and a half away within NJ (all local roads, total distance ~60 miles) : $17.50!!
This one really surprised me. I rarely ship bowling balls within NJ.

Both of these are residential; UPS charges about $2.50 extra for some unknown reason, for residential deliveries.

Just a couple of weeks ago I shipped a 14 lb ball via ups to Maryland from Florida and cost nearly $27, the person in Maryland shipped a 15l b ball back to me via usps for just under $17. Now normally I hate to use the usps for shipping because more often than not the box arrives looking like it was used as a soccer ball from door to door, however for the $10 difference a little extra tape and more careful packing seems to make sense.

I recently learned that a true tracking number is now included free with Priority Mail or better, but you still have to pay extra for insurance. I wouldn't ship anything these days without insurance.

I shipped a 15# ball from California to Florida this week for just under $21 with FedEx. And it will be delivered on Saturday, which UPS does not do.

$12.80 NJ to NJ.

Oh, I know, but, for me, there's a degree of convenience involved (for which we always pay). UPS is 10 minutes away; FEDEX is 30 minutes away.

I have online accounts with both and those prices represent that discount, also.

Just tried to get a shipping estimate and here's yet another pain in the butt from FEDEX: I not only have to login, I now have to change my frigging password. Because they decided to change their frigging security procedures. If they had decent ones to begin with, I wouldn't be so frustrated with them and feel like never using them again. Bugger!

... Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Yea, they made me change my password this week too. Not to mention, they now require at least one capital and one lower case letter in your password. Remembering all the different passwords is getting out of hand.
