The 5-7-10
« on: July 02, 2006, 03:24:16 AM »
I was subbing for my brother in a league at The Alley here in Wichita, for some that are Wichita bowlers, its 4 bowlers per pair, peterson points league.  Bowling on lanes 11-12, the rack on 12 was always offset, big gap between the 1-5 and the 3-9.  Now I know people have left the 5-7-10, but here is the strange twist.  The guy bowling last on the opposite screen left a 5-7-10 in the 10th frame of the first game.  No big deal, we've all seen it.  In the first frame of the second game, he goes up and leaves it again.  He thought he had won the lottery or something.  I was giong to lane 12 after the first guy bowled, and I left the 5-7-10.  Done 3 times in one night on the same lane, something aint right.  During the 3rd game, the leadoff on 11 goes up in the 8th frame and leaves the 5-7-10.  We told the front desk about it, and how the rack was gapped and we were leaving wierd stuff, like the 5-7-10.  The guy who was lucky not to leave one did leave a pocket 4-6.  Anyone got any comments about this???

Actually I've seen worse than that before at one of the local alleys here in Boise.  I remember a few years ago, that on lanes 1 and 2 (none of the other lanes usually, there were some real problems with 5-7-10s being left.  They were AMF 82-70 pinsetters, with amf amflite pins (still have problems with them and they've even changed to twister pins)  The racks were almost always solid on spot racks.  So I can't explain why it was happening, but one night, in a 4 person league,  the 5-7-10 was left 8 times on lane 1 and 5 times on lane 2.  That was an absolutely insane night,  at first people were mad about the leaves, by the end of the night, it was a competition to see who could leave the most.

Dry lanes can also result in funny leaves, even on pocket hits. Especially when it is warm/humid, and you play on a lane that has not been refreshed for some time you can have fun with ugly leaves like lilys, Greek Churches, Big 4, 7-10 or 4-6.

Had this last Friday in my club house, where we had to play on a lane that had not been re-done since Thursday afternoon. Oil (or whatever was left of it) was only a 38' long, oily tongue in the middle, while the back end and probably the outside 12(!) boards had become dry (they were supposed to be buffed to the gutter, as well as the pattern to 42' - as we were told afterwards). We had fun the whole evening, either only hitting Brooklyn or leaving something nasty. 2 plits per fame were normal for everyone in the training, plus some wide open spares like the 1-2-4-6-10.

I've always wondered what caused that particular leave, did they get picked up? What I want to know is what caused me to leave the 1,5,7,10 for the 3rd week in a row one in each game after 3 or 4 strikes.

For the 5-7-10, see above. Weak pocket hit (no roll), dry lane and/or light ball weight cause this. Or it can be the result of an odd domino effect, this happens too. If you additionally keep the 1 standing, than the ball came in too high (I suppose into the 3-6 pocket, and you might have aimed from a deeper position, e.g. across 3rd arrow?), probably with much spin/high speed for a shallow entry angle.
Ball will have gone dead straight through the right side of the pin deck and the 3 slipped between the 1 and 5 to take out the left side as collateral damage. No systematic leave, I'd say, rather an artist's expression on the lanes...

Slow down and try to stay behind the ball a little more, or try an inside line down 10th board with a down and in shot.

The combination of 20 year old Brunswick synthetics (some with guardian on the heads) and Twisters have resulted in several 5 7 10 s in a house I bowl at.  Everyone stands up and cheers!!!  I've even printed up homemade patches and handed them out!!!

I used to bowl in a house that gave you a card when you left your first 5-7-10 there, denoting you as a member of their 5-7-10 club. Most everybody who bowled there had one, including some guys who hooked it pretty good. Hitting a bad rack in the right way can cause this split.

I think (now) that leaving the 5-8-10 (RH) or 5-7-9 (LH) is much more embarrassing, I can't remember the last time I saw a good bowler leave either of those except for a rocket launcher fill ball, but they were fairly common with rubber and plastic.

I don't know I was baffled the other day when I saw someone leave a 7-9-10, and then again there was my friend who threw the ball in the gutter and picked the 7-10 off on a full rack.  Things just work in mysterious ways I guess
