251.8 avg.....15 yrs old
« on: January 17, 2004, 12:23:40 PM »
Western NY has it's share of top youth, past and present. Recently Ryan Ciminelli and Lidsay Baker (Tom's neice) have gotten some good ink around the states. But here is a kid to watch for........

Erik Westfield, age 15, bowling for Maryvale H.S. (last years State Champs) averaging 251.8 after 5 matches in 4 different houses! Last week 275-770, Monday 284-785. His low set was 712 so far.

His brother Cody is a freshman bowling at Erie Community College. I have watched both of them, as well as Baker and Ciminelli most of last summer at the teen shootouts, and now this year as well during H.S. matches and the Travel League where my son bowls.

This kid simply repeats and repeats shots! A lot of fun to watch, and a genuinely nice youth too!

Um....wow.

Either the kid is really that good or he's bowling on the Great Wall of China.  Let's hope it's the former rather than the latter.

Thanks for telling us about this youngster .. certainly sounds like a name to remember .. I think the big thing that's being missed by previous posters is:
--------------------------------------------------
This kid simply repeats and repeats shots! A lot of fun to watch, and a genuinely nice youth too!

The NICE YOUTH comment is the one that makes me feel GOOD!

Why not just say something positive? I don't care how easy a shot is, how many other 15 year olds (or anyone for that matter) average that.

Please. you need to read the post about being cocky.

Joe as you state, a prominent and lost part is that he is a genuinely nice "kid". His parents have raised 2 wonderful sons, and the father is a supportive, but not pushy Dad.

As to his High School average, that is straight from the ECIC records, and was published in Saturday's Buffalo Evening News, and headlined in the bowling column. Also stated he shot 279 in the final game of the Festival of Lights Tourney in Niagara Falls, which propelled his teAm to a 13 pin win (total 6 games) over my sons school to win the tourney. (sidenote, my son was 2nd in singles for the tourney).

As to the traveling youth league, they use variations of patterns at MANY different houses throughout the region, and yes, his average is lower in that league, but still in the high 220's. Even though it is a competitive league, it is by far a more "fun" environment than the High School league.

Believe this, I have watched him personally bowl against Brad Angelo, trading shots, using different lines, starting at the twig and going as deep as capping the gutter crossing the 5th arrow! This youngster is GOOD!

I am proud to have gotten to know him, his brother and father through bowling, and if anyone has any doubt about any of this, please come to WNY, watch, and maybe bowl some with myself and others for fun.

As for Tracker798, this invite is also for you. Since you have no profile, percentages are that you are not from WNY. If you are in WNY, let me know when we can get together so as to watch "young" Westfield and his talents.

Tracker,
You posted that you had "other" stats on the web for Erik Westfield. I have posted the articles regarding this youth. You state "Fact is, it doesn't happen. I looked up the young man you were refering to, but what I'm finding on the net doesn't match up to your post. Sure, he's bowling about 210-220's from what I've seen, but 251 ave is far fetched." That average is for 18 games in 4 different houses, during High School competition. Where are your stats?

I am not saying that he is going to average that all season, nor that he will even average 240. But at that age, the kid has "game"! He has played against some top pro's, and held his own. My point is twofold, if this bowler enjoys the sport, and chooses to stay with it, I would not be surprised that you one day see him on television. More importantly, he is still a down to earth genuinely nice person.

And sorry, he is a righty

Sr, I will pass on your congrats and invite. Maybe somehow I can catch a video of him in action as well.

That is amazing that at that age he has so much talent. Hopefully he can keep up the great bowling and move on to become a great one in the pros. If that's what he wants to do with his life.

Half my age and twice the bowler. lol. More power to him.

And to all of you who dont believe, or want to talk about the wall he must be on....why don't you stop being jealous of his talent and state the obvious. The kid is dam good and deserves the proper credit for what he can do.

All I can say is so what!!!  Every once in a blue moon a Tiger Woods type person comes around.  There are very few people that can average 220 to 230 around where I am at consistently.  If this young man can and does then hopefully he will be around for quite a while and you will most likely see him on tour.  Some people are just born gifted.  The lanes may be easy and he may be good.  As he is exposed to the bowling world things may change.  To score that well even on easy lanes is still quite an accomplishment.

Amazing!  I thought my 224 was a good average.  A 251 average kinda makes me look like doggy snark!

I have only been averaging 252.1 the last few weeks in practice.

And it's taken me 4 years to get to this point.

Of course I do most of mine when I'm alone.  Also when I get done with a game most of my scores have different colors on the score sheets.  I only use that change score thing a few times a game when if I'd tried I really would have made the spares.

At the pace I'm improving 4 years and 252.1 I think since I ONLY averaged 200 in my first year that at this pace and with that little score thing I should be at about 301.7 at the end of the next 4(only extrapolating at a straight line improvement).  If I start practicing more even higher(geometric improvement)!
