2nd Shift Leagues & broken down lanes
« on: February 12, 2005, 09:45:59 AM »
I bowl 2nd Shift whether its league or practice time.  I haven't bowled on a freshly oiled lanes except maybe 2 or 3 times in the past year.

I get to my league on wednesday and the lanes were hooking like crazy.  I usually play 3rd arrow to the 18th board during league play. I never use to play that part of the lane.  I just take what it gives me and that is where I feel most comfortable playing now.

However I was playing through the middle and I was hooking way left.  I was hesitant about moving more left and playing and even deeper line.  I tried playing up the gutter with no success.  I tried swinging the ball out in between 2nd and 3rd arrows still hooking way left.  For about 4 frames I was able to play the 3rd arrow and string some strikes together but that soon was toast too.

Does anyone else play that deep inside during league play?  I am not trying to throw a big hook but just taking what the lane gives me.  I do have a slower ball speed than most bowlers who throw big hooks.

I was trying everything and couldn't find the pocket. I even tried using my White Dot and even that was hooking on me and I wasn't even trying to hook it, not to mention the carry was horrible.

For the start of the 3rd game I went back to my original spot between 3rd and 4th arrows, moved left and played the 22nd board.  I finally found some oil.  My ball was skidding a little from what I could see and had a decent 217 game at the end.

What type of ball would be best to use on a 2nd shift league?  Reactive or Particle?  I went with my power groove reactive, but am starting to think that its too unpredictable on the backend.

thank you

The Power Groove can be super stupid on the back. It may not give you the control you are looking for on a dry lane.  If they are hooking that much why not throw your White Dot?  If you aren't comfortable playing inside than the White Dot could get you back in your comfort zone.

I think the XXXL is a good suggestion but my dry lane ball of choice is the Visionary Slate Blue Gargoyle. It is cheaper than the XXXL and in my mind rolls better.
