2nd Step... to drift or not to drift
« on: January 21, 2010, 09:03:37 AM »
Ok, so lately I have been trying to re-vamp my game, and clean it up. I have noticed that my 2nd step goes like I am walking, just a step forward, no big deal. But I have been dealing with some dry shots lately and usually to deal with the ball return I would just drift around it a little with my 3rd step, but recently I have noticed that if I take my 2nd step and sort of step in front of my left foot (5 step approach BTW), creating a small drift where then the rest of my approach follows that I seem to have an easier time throwing the ball "out" to the right than I did when drifting with the 3rd step... I guess my question is do any of you guys have an explanation for this at all? Do any of you guys do this? I notice that Robert Smith does this every shot... maybe something worth looking into doing every shot?

I should note that I am what most would consider a "power player" however I have never been someone who drifts on their approach.

I just noticed Michael Fagan drifts a lot on his 2nd step as well. I have always heard that drifting to the left helps get your swing behind you so it will feed to the right... is this correct? I just feel that I pull it less with that little drift...

In a five step approach your 2nd step is SUPPOSED to cross over in front of your first step.  This gets your body out of the way of your swing.

Good article! I know what the idea of it was but I never had done it before, I will further experiment with it and see how it goes at league I guess...

If you are a 5 step approach bowler your 2nd step should go infront of your body to clear your hips to allow for a straighter arm swing. Drifting is not a big deal as long as its the same every time no matter where you are playing. So dont worry about drifting itself just make sure its the same amount of boards everytime

Walk normally, the key is to do the same thing every time. You start staggering around you will throw off your timing.
