Looking for your input on smaller ball companies
« on: October 29, 2004, 03:24:30 PM »
I was sitting around thinking today.  I have decided that I would like to try a company, preferably a smaller one, that I have never tried before.

I have considered a Hero from Circle Athletics but I hear they are made by Storm.  I am not a huge storm fan.  I haven't tried much of there latest offerings, what I have I didn't care for much.

The company that really interests me is Visionary.  I don't know anyone in this area with a piece of visionary equipment.

I have never tried an:
AZO
Visionary
Dynothane
Circle Athletics

Any input that you could provide would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Andrew

In my profile, I list all the equipment I currently use.  If you have any specific questions, I'll be glad to answer them.  I like trying the "smaller" brands.  Dynothane and RotoGrip have been very good to me.  The only Visionary ball I have is urethane, but it is very good.

Thanks Strider, I have some questions about bowli.......I mean home brewing, sounds like fun.

Actually, the Urethane Gargoyle does interest me.  I am looking for something that isn't really strong but can carry in late games(8-9 game blocks).  I picked up the XXXL from lane #1 for that purpose.

I would still like to try something just b/c everyone around here sticks only to the major brands.

I used to be on visionary test staff thing and my favourites were the blue warlock and green gargoyle. But then i got a red executioner and did nothing for me. After that i never got another visionary ball.I have also had an Idol from Circle, Its a great ball. I am not a big storm fan either but the weight core in this is something else. I only use the idol on sport conditions and have not had great success with it on THS.  Right now Legends by Lane Masters is all i'm using. The Yeah baby in my opinion is the best ball out there right now. I can use it on house and all sport conditions. Exept super dry of course. I have 3 of the lane masters balls right now. all hit exceptionally well and react like no other ball i've tried.

I think the small companies are doing a great job in this mass market of high tech bowling balls.I have a green gargoyle and a total annihilation and in their respective groups they rank right at the top with rest of the big guys or even better.2 guys on my bowling team have Lane Master Legends balls the Yeah Baby and New Standerd they both roll very smooth and carry well not skid/snap just heavy roll, myself i am leaning towards the Big Kahuna or the Dirty Bomb.So don't be afraid to give the small guy's a try they knock'em down too.

The Slate Gargoyle probably isn't for pure toast, but it will handle "normal" dry just fine.  It's forte' is controlling flying backends.  When resin is flipping uncontrollably, this is a good ball to have.  I've started using in leagues quite a bit lately.  I like swing the ball a fair amount, but if I have my choice of getting real deep, or playing closer to the track with a weak ball, I'll choose the waek ball.  The biggest drawback is carrydown.  You can ping a lot of 10's if you can't get the ball driving to the pins.  Still, shooting 10's is a lot easier than some of the artwork you can leave by throwing a resin ball gutter to gutter.

I've been trying some of the smaller companies for the past few years now.  Dynothane, RotoGrip, Lane#1, Visionary, MoRich, and AZO.  I find that I seem to have more success with the Visionary balls so far.

Andy,

Why not take a step back and tell us what kind of condition on which you like to try one of these smaller companies' balls? That will let us all inundate you with specific choices. I have tried almost every company except Circle Athletics, due to monetary and time constraints.

Charlest,

That is a good idea.  Will for starters, you can forget ANYTHING particle.  I would like to try a resin or resin pearl with a 5 x 4 drilling.  With that said, I am not ruling out the idea of the Slate Blue Gargoyle.  I see most lighter conditions or meduim conditions.  In the rare situation that I do see oil, I think I have it covered with my SCB.

Thanks for all the input guys, I was out of town this weekend.  The wife was bowling a tourney.

My friend bought the AZO Ulitma RP but he hasn't drilled it yet.  I have no idea what it is going to do or how he plans on drilling it.

Thanks,
Andrew

Whether it is a big-time company or a smaller start-up, all of the bowling balls available for you to buy are still round (at least in my observations).
