300 approval letter

I recently received the ABC letter confirming the approval of my latest 300, as if that was in doubt.  

How many remember when 300's approval was maybe in question?  I remember a 300 and and the last eleven in a row by some bowlers years ago and they brought in scales, checked the lanes etc.  It was a major deal.

I am officially now showing my age.

I've been bowling or around 17+ years now and I don't ever remember seeing them go to any trouble when an honor score was thrown.  Ofcourse I didn't see any in Junior leagues so it's possible!

The only thing I ever remember seeing was a tournament wanting to weigh out one of my bowling balls after throwing an honor score.  Felt kind of weird, but I drilled the ball so I knew it was o.k.

I threw 300 in the State tournament a few years ago and there was not even a hint of checking the ball.  The only place they are REALLY checked is the  ABC's.   You want to have some fun watch all those balls get holes whacked in em after they are rejected.  The horror on some of those faces is priceless.  Back in Billings they only guy who had balls to get modified was our one guy who worked in a Pro Shop.  Imagine the ribbing he got from that day and every tournament after that.

A guy on our pair at ABC had his ball weigh in at 16.01 pounds. He said he'd been using it for 3 years at ABC, without a problem.
They told him it had probably soaked up a lot of oil over the years...
He didn't know that could happen.

Suffice to say, he probably never cleans 'em either!

My dad had one thrown out after the lanes were checked.  
They told him that there was no oil on the 17th board.  
He was playing 7 all night.  
He never crossed 17, unless shooting a 10 earilier in the night.  

He was throwing a Black hammer on one lane, and a wine U-dot on the other.   Kinda dates him and me, huh?

I had both those balls.   Dates me as well.  I remember (and i am being honest here) throwing my first 300 in 1985 with a black angle after a 234 game one.  Game three I go the first 4 and the guy at the desk tells me to be careful, if I bowl to well my scores "might" get rejected.  I being young and stupid go up in the 5th frame and purposely toss the ball wide and leave 2 pins.  300's  meant something and I wanted mine approved.  So i proceed to throw a 256 game as i did not strike in the 8th as well on a legit shot.   790, who knows could of had an 800 early on 3-5 years b4 i got the real one.  

Remember I said I was young and stupid

AS Bones states, the sec/dir would be called out at any time of the nite and a chair was placed immediately on the pair that the honor score was thrown on so there could be no tampering/altering of the lanes before the sec/dir got there.

Scratch dbls in Laredo Lanes in South Chicago 1984-85, shot 300, my doubles partner(C. Swierz) punched out for 290, 590 total.  At the time, ABC record was 579...did I make the history books?  Of course not, first honor scores to be declined out of the house in years.  They gave us BPAA rings as a consolation.. I gave mine away out of disgust.

I have had as many declined 300's as I have sanctioned through the 80's. It was a joke back then having an award score... when one got approved it was like a miracle and ABC must have made a mistake of your buddie was the one certifying the condition. All that mattered to me was the satisfaction that I may have made some really good shots along the way. I mean, since awards were shot on unfair conditions and everyone knew it, it was my only satisfaction knowing I may have made 5 or 6 or 7 good shots it that particular game. And even though all awards get approved today, these is no difference in my personal appreciation of an award score I shot. I rate each shot on it own merrit, weather it strikes or not. And keep score every night. It must have been nice when strikes were the true measuring stick of performance.
