Ball Cracking
« on: April 12, 2010, 08:49:12 AM »
I discovered a nasty crack in my Cell Pearl over the weekend. Not that big of a deal since Storm/Roto is replacing the ball.

The question is about how the crack happened. My pro shop guy mentioned that balls that are stationary for long periods will tend to crack whereas the same ball might not have cracked if it was repositioned every week or so. He also said his shop rotates their stock each week to help with cracking.

Has anyone else heard this?

Yeah, its a theory that going around. Something about the constant pressure from the weight of the ball being concentrated on one spot for prolonged periods of time, stressing the molecular structure of the coverstock.

As for stationary for long periods, what about the balls you use week after week. They are hardly stationary for long periods And they crack too.

I think its more temperature changes and a weak area of the coverstock. Plus the coverstock are kind of thin on today''s balls also.

The thing with balls stationary for long periods I''ve saw, are dents from ball cups and small flat spots from setting in boxes on hard floors.

Yep, that's pretty much how he stated it. Gravity compressing one side of the ball causing stress on the cover.

It's my first ball to crack, so seemed a bit odd to me.

Lucky dog. I went through a spell a couple of years back where it seemed I was losing one a week or so to cracks. Think I lost 5-6 over a couple of months.

I have been lucky so far, but I've only been bowling for a little over two years. I've heard others talking about a ball cracking, it just had not happened to me. I'm fortunate though, the ball was a year old next month and the pro shop didn't give it a second thought. I didn't expect a new ball, thought maybe it could be repaired since the crack was from a finger hole to a balance/weight hole, not all the way around. It's always good to be friendly to your pro shop. LOL
