does anybody have a funny story about their first 300 (or any 300 game)...for example a poor series or followed by a terrible game...
my first 300 (and only one so far) was in a local singles tournament with a top prize of $1,000 where you bowl 6 games and keep your best 5 bowling on a different pair each game...my first game was the 300 then followed it up with first 2 strikes second game, nice split open, and banged out for a 262, so 800 is a definite possibility, only to follow that game up with a 161. following that game i throw a 279 so i really hate myself for that 161. then after that throw another 160+ game and follow that with a 234...well lets just say i placed 3rd in the tourney winning $200...i lost out by 4 pins!!!! 4 pins was the difference between $200 and $1,000
-
i wish i was old enough to drink so i could have that as an excuse for 2 160 games when the other games were so good ha
-
My 2nd had a good story. I was on a date with a chick for the first time, and since we lived far from one another, our meeting place was a bowling alley.
We bowled a few games, and my first game I shot 300.
No HJ, No BJ,nothing.....we dated for a few months after that, but I mean come on...it was a 300!!

I don't know if it's more funny or more sad, but my first one only netted me a 626 series.
I will add that it was 2 weeks after a 6-month deployment however.

Lol, I had about a 180 somthing average when I bowled my first 300 back in 1990 using a Teal Rhino. The lanes were oily the first game and I shot a 165 but finished the game with a turkey. I shot the 300 game in the middle...I was so nervous that I got brooklyn's for the first and second shot in the tenth. I relaxed after that thinking no matter what I would have a 290 game (wasn't even thinking 300) and I threw my best ball of the game for the last shot. Back then it was a big deal and there were probably about 30 people standing behind my lanes. I was so pumped up, I ran back, whacked my knee on the ball return and kinda collapsed back in the seating area. Talk about heart pounding! Even though my knee was killing me, I threw the first three strikes of the next game but between the alcohol and the lanes drying out I ended with 167 game. So I only ended with a 632 series but to this day, the 18 strikes in a row is my best run....
My second 300 game (just last fall) came 18 years later and was alot more relaxing and subdued....oh and I threw good shots for all the strikes and had a much better series (757)... =)

Not my first 300, but I had one that I just couldn't miss no matter how bad I throw it. I carried a 4-7-9-10 domino style during that game.

A blind man can shoot 300, we have a 162 average bowler who throws the ball 13mph and drops it before the foul line shoot 300 2 weeks ago. So I believe the only true honor scores left are 800 and 900.

My wife came to the bowling alley with me because our beloved cat her best friend suddenly died the night before and she did not want to stay home alone. She cried off and on for days. Anyway I was using a black polished particle groove that has something serious goofed up inside. The ball flares the wrong way. Anyway somehow I managed to throw the front 11. I was so nervous because she never saw me bowl a 300 before. I was on the approach thinking to myself throw one for Tigger. I threw an awful shot way left but a high brooklyn carried so I bowled a 300 game for my wife and cat. We got drunk after that, and pretty much most of the next day.
I know somebody who bowled a 300 without shooting 600.
-
This isn't me - but...
I know of an older lady in town who shot 300 in her senior league.
After the game was done, and the excitement died down, she turned to her teammate and said "maybe now, someday, I'll finally shoot a 600 series"...
She'd never had one - and didn't that day, either.

This is about as funny as it gets for me. My second one, the last one I bowled, was during no tap bowling. I didn't get a single 9-count for three games and I bowled my highest series of 756 too.

was he left handed? because that would explain it...j/k
either way a 300 is still an honor score, because it takes some nerves of steel to complete it (at least with all "good" shots), especially if it's the first one!
-
My first 300 was funny, I had the front 11 and after the 11th strike, my ball got stuck in the pit and I had to wait probably all of 5 minutes for the ball the return, people standing aroung everywhere and I finally get the ball back. Needless to say, I pulled the s##t out of my last one for a brooklyn strike on the 12th ball. After that I went on to shoot a whopping 157 my second game and then got it back together for a 269 my last.

my first 300 was in a high school match. in the 9th frame the opposing coach sat next to me and kept saying "You ever done this before? must be nervous, would hate to leave a ten pin right now huh?". i struck out, but my team still lost by a pin, ONE PIN!!!!! the other team (these are 4 man teams) avg. 245. i thought it was quite funny

I would have lost it on the coach. Trying to play mind games with a kid bowling for an opposing team...thats pretty low.
On monday, the guy that owns the house shot 300 his last game. He had spent a lot of time that night on the roof of the bowling alley clearing off snow and ice as the roof had developed a leak. Then he comes in a shoots decent the first 2 games and then shoots 300 the final game....with 2 domino strikes in there for good measure.

Well my first 3 hundred came in the first round of a doubles team match. For qualifying the lanes were really tight so i used my old the hex to start off. I shoot 650 without using my thumb then as they broke down i started off up five fluffing it with my speed demon and it was rolling out. I switched to my inferno and shoot 300 the first game of semis with my thumb. The next game start off strike then 10 pin messenger miss spare strike then ended up with a 224 and last game 184 lol but we made it too the finals which was then baker.
The funny thing about this, is that this was the first time my mom or dad did not come to a tournament and as an experiment it worked lol. to this day neither of them have seen a 300.
(Forest Gump Voice On)My second sanctioned 300 was memorable too it was a saturday afternoon league with an oil shot like a box of chocolates(Forest Gump voice Off). lol I shoot 178 193 167 and the final game i was bowling this girl that i had to give 60 pins to. She started with the front 3 and i am like
so what do i do? keep on striking and not looking back lol.

Last year I was bowling a tournament at a local house. After 2 games it was looking like I was going to miss the cut. There was a birthday party going on a few lanes over. One of the kids grabbed a ball and ran up onto my lane while I was on the approach. A bunch of us started yelling "no, no!" (not the kids' parents of course). Kid looks back at us, then turns around and tosses it down my lane. I didn't even know what to say or do. I can't remember what frame I was in at the time, but I ended up shooting 300 and making the cut after all.

I've thrown 2 300s in the 9 or so years I've been back to bowling (none before....way tooo young when I quit).
The first 300 I threw I had the pleasure of doing so when I was bowling with my 9 year old son in a Youth/Adult league. He was so excited....probably more than me.
Sad thing is the second time I shot a 300, the next was below 200. Oh well.

My first Sanctioned 300 Was on lanes 21-22. On my last shot my knees started to wobble half way into my approach, resulting in a major TUG shot. I went brooklyn(not even a good brooklyn) and the pins slowly fell!! I was 17 at the time. We were bowling a doubles league and my partner shot 129, we lost the game by a pin!!! WTF!

One Saturday they made an announcement that they were paying out the 2nd game handicap pot with 301. We were only in the 5th frame because of a pin jam. I told the guy I was only in the 5th frame & had the 1st five strike and could tie with my one pin of handicap if I strike out. He laughed, said OK and walked away. About 20 minutes later I was the one laughing with 300 + 1 for the tie.

On the night of my first 300 my girlfriend(now my wife)who would always come down to watch me bowl after work, around 7pm, calls me and says that she isnt going to make it until after bowling ends and tells me jokingly not to shoot a 300. I did in the third game, and she comes walking through the front door while I'm getting a print out at the front desk. She asks me what I'm getting a print out for, so I show her the paper and she starts crying because she wasnt there, then gives me a big hug and kiss. She has been there for my next 2 though.

After not bowling for almost 10 years, I talked my Dad into bowling in a men's league with a couple of old bowling buddies of his. About halfway through the league, my Dad shot a 289, the highest game of his life. The following week, I got stuck in traffic and walked into the center as shadow practice was completed. I changed shoes, threw the first 10 in a row, carried an absolute beaker for the 11th and threw a truck for the 12th and my first 300. To this day I'm 50% thrilled with the 300 and 50% bummed for stealing his thunder.
My dad doesn't bowl anymore, and I'm just waiting for one of my sons to return the favor.

My first 300, back in 1995, I was bowling on a 2nd shift league with all family members. My mom was the only one there with me that night. Grandfather and uncle are working musicians and had a gig.
I had two shots go through the nose where the pins toppled over and a couple brooklyns.
Around the 9th frame a crowd started to gather. This house had about 20 300 games thrown in it throughout the history. I buried 3 flush shots in the 10th to get it. Was pretty exciting.
Yet was one of my worse games performance wise. I've thrown so many 250+ games that were leaps better. That's bowling for ya.

My first 300 game: 151-300-162 Raging Inferno Didnt even hit the head pin! I looked up and seen the 2-4-5-8 standing and something hit the head pin and it toppled over the bucket! I ran the shot out like 5 lanes down and almost flipped over the ball return!

My first 300 came last year.
I walked into a house ive never bowled in before and since I just recently moved next to this house I decided Id try bowling it. well the league I decided to bowl jn has 7 established pros in it so I went in a little nervous. There was one team looking for a bowler so I offered my services and the first game ever in the house I shot my first 300! All of a sudden everybody in the house including the pros started asking bout me---I wrote it off as just a fluke but then proceeded to throw first 8 in second game!!! Ended night throwing 777,

Dont know how funny these stories are? Sounds like a good excuse to talk about 300s.....
About 7 years ago, a buddy and I had a friendly bet going---$5/game---$20 for a sweep.
1st night of the league---I shoot 230+, 230+, 300. $20. Now I was a sub---so not bowling close to every week. But I had bowled a few nights here and there. But he and I hadnt bet. So then, a little later in the season we catch a night where we are close to each other again.
We do the same $5/game, $20 for a sweep. I bowled terrible the first 2 games. 193 (which won), 160+. So we are even for money....
The last game he comes down about the 7th or 8th frame looking prouder than ever. "Looks like you'll be paying me tonight---I shot 268". I point at my scoreboard. He just says "You have got to be kidding me". I finish the 300. He disappears for about 5 minutes. He comes back---and he pays me---with $5 of pennies......
The night of the 2nd 300 in that league, something else happened. I had been throwing very few strikes. I struck on the fill ball of game 2. At the time, my best friend and his buddy had shown up. I told them they werent allowed to leave because I was on a string---a 1 bagger. So they stood there and we talked the whole last game---while I continued to string. My dad came in, in about the 3rd frame. He says in about the 6th frame---well Im going to go to the bathroom and hit the road. I said, "You know, you cant change anything on a string. Id hate for you to go to the bathroom now and have my string end". So they all stayed and I finished the job. I thought that was kind of comical.

I don't FIGJAM very often, so excuse me for this one.
My first (and only, so far) 300 was shot in the summer of '73 in Beaumont, TX. Lacquer finished lanes that played best inside the third arrow, using a Brunswick Black Diamond in a scratch doubles league. The center's owner had drilled the Black Diamond for me and convinced me to move inside, which I had been practicing. I had only recently shot my first 700 series, so when I started with 248 and 236 my thoughts were on doing well enough to have another 700. After the first six all I thought was that I'd really have to mess up not to have a 700. In the seventh or eighth frame I tripped a 4 pin, the only shot that wasn't packed, and started thinking 300. After the ninth the owner came over to watch, and I went back to talk to him. I told him I thought I'd move back out to the first arrow for the tenth frame. He almost had a coronary, I still can't believe he thought I really would. The first shot in the tenth was no problem, but when time came to throw the second ball my knees were shaking so bad I almost couldn't pick the ball up. Still managed to pack the final two for the 300. Then the owner told me I had just set a new city record high 3 game series, 784, beating the old record by 9 pins. Not long after that the owner sold the center and the new owners came in and blocked the lanes. As far as I know (I moved away in the spring of 1974) I still hold the city record for a series bowled on unblocked lanes. -- JohnP

My first 300, came back in Feb 2001, during our City Tournament. Well the whole year at said house i was struggling badly, averaging like mid 180s, but at the other house i was low 200's.
Well i decided to bring out my old El Nino, and got a practice lane and was feeling pretty good about my reaction. Well it was the second shift of the tourny but we ended up with fresh lanes!!! I start out first game going up 10, and have the first couple strikes and a few more, by the 9th frame of course everyone was getting quiet, and i flush my 10th, 11th one, i tug it and it goes brooklyn and i get a trip 6!!! and flush the 12th,,, That was the only time i've had everyone who was bowling in the tourny come up and high-five me and give me congrats.... Because after that, the house went from a super hard shot, to completely blocked....
The other special part was my mom happend to come watch me bowl and was so happy for me that she was crying.. which also happens to be the only time she's seen me bowl a 300....
now for a good story about someone shooting 300, a friend of mine Jeff Clear, was pot bowling someone and shoots 299 against said guy, and is like come on i was just in the zone and bla bla bla, and gets this guy to go double or nothing the next game, and proceeds to shoot 300 lol.

First 300 I shot was an accident of sorts. A friend and I were bowling a mixed summer league with our wives. I had been struggling with my equipment and asked him if he still had an old Black Hammer ( urethane ) which he had drilled but didn't like. He told me he did and I asked him to bring it the following week.
Next week rolls around and he bring the old Hammer. Not really wanting to use it for a whole set ( because it didn't fit me all that well), I start out with my reactive ball, which was over reacting from the get-go. In the tenth frame, I pick up the old Hammer and say " What could I hurt now, it couldn't be any worse".
First shot went WAY light, so I moved my feet10 boards right for the fill shot. Ball hit weakly and left a weak 7 pin ( I'm a righty).
Next game, I move two more boards right ( out into the dry ) and pipe the old Hammer right up the 7 board. It made a small arc to the pocket and carried a light shaker. I thought "well, not impressive, but I think I'll go ahead and throw it until it doesn't work", so I continued.
Frames two and three were more of the same, clipping the headpin and carrying light mixers. Not trusting that, I made another two board adjustment in the fourth frame. Feet on twelve, ball out over the five board, POW High flush, ten in the pit. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Not really trusting, or believing, I just told myself don't fix what isn't broken, so I continued to throw the ball the same as best I could, and it continued to strike. Then came the tenth frame.
First ball came clean off my hand, felt like I got a little extra on it, but it settled into the pocket a touch high and rolled the four pin. First ball down.
Second shot seemed to hang just a bit, but the follow through was good and the ball was on line. Settled into the pocket lightly and carried a hard swisher. Second ball down.
Third shot and I was so nervous you could hear my teeth chattering, or at least it felt that way. My friend spoke up and said "Just do what you've been doing and don't think about it", so I tried, but I felt weak and the ball seemed to weigh 20lbs. I got to the line SOMEHOW, and released the ball early with about 2/3 the revs I normally have, and about two boards inside my mark and all I can say is THANK GOD FOR URETHANE! That old Hammer just laid there, a frozen rope to the pocket. The last thing I saw was the five pin sliding over into the seven pin for my 300.
I've shot a couple more since then, but that first time will always be in my memory. The thrill, the excitement, the relief.

My first 300 was memorable. I had nothing but quality shots and as I got closer to the 10th frame I felt the nerves creep up. The first shot in the 10th? Burried it. I'm waiting for the ball to come back and it seemed like forever. It wasn't forever but could have been as the ball was stuck and I had to call the desk. These break downs happen a lot so I felt myself getting frustrated, what a time. Finally the ball gets there, I try to settle down and actually threw a decent ball and struck. The last shot I was definitely nervous. I got out of the ball clean but I left a solid ten pin. As I stood in disappointment the pin must have been nipped by another and was actually spinning around. Just before the rack came down the pin went off the back of the deck and I stood there in disbelief.
My latest 300 I threw on a broken leg. I had rolled my right ankle 2 weeks prior, Xrays were negative but the pain persisted so I went for an MRI. That was on a Friday, Tuesday I bowled the 300 and weds I got word I fractured my shin bone. I'll use that as the excuse for the 161 follow up game after the 300. It really wasn't an excuse I could barely walk on it. I missed 3 weeks total and was back out there.
-
tonight at league a guy had the first 10. Then the lane broke down. Had to wait at least 20-30 minutes. the lane was never fixed and he finished up on the other lane and finished his 300.
