300 or 800 which would you rather have ?
« on: July 22, 2011, 02:30:31 AM »
I almost got my first 800 last night and am still looking for my first 300. Since my brother got his 300 last year, my mom is always saying you'll get your 300 someday. I don't think people understand that the 800 is almost better than the 300. I might want the 800 first, but would gladly take either. Any thoughts ?

800 has to have more value than a 300. You can carry a few Brooklyn hits for a 300 but it isn't likely that you can luck out and get an 800. You have to roll the ball real well for three games for 800.

That's a good question. I'll go against conventional wisdom for better bowlers and say 300 over 800. 300 is a "perfect" game. 800 is sustained good shotmaking and carry, and much less common, but not "perfect". Personally I could have lived without an 800 in my "career", but could have lived without a 300. JMHO.

Anybody can get lucky and shoot 300, but it's harder to get that lucky for an 800! I've seen several people get 300's and not shoot 600 with a lots of brooklyn strikes!

I once had the opportunity to speak at length with Earl Anthony and he was wearing his 800 ring. I asked him the same question and he was unwavering, 800. He said you have to bowl at a very high level for three games and 300 was great, but you didn't necessarily have to make 12 great shots to get one.

800!! All day every day! I have a couple of 300 games, one of which I threw and didn't even know I was throwing it. One I threw on a sport conditon and got extremely lucky to get it. Sometimes 300 games just find you!

An 800 means you are bowling with consistency and reading the lanes correctly as they transition and breakdown. To me, that is huge! I can't tell you how many times I have made third game moves......only to realize after getting tapped twice.....that I didn't make a big enough move, that would have changed that 223 game into a 258 or better game!
Some days you're the bug....some days you're the windshield...that's bowling!

Is it really a question? You can't "get lucky" enough to shoot an 800 series.

A 300 usually comes before your first 800. you have three chances to get a 300 in each series. you only have ONE shot for an 800. I was 13 when i shot my first 300 but i ended that set with a 691 series. It was not until two years ago at age 19, I shot my first 800. I am 21 now and a 300 is extremely easy to come by especially with the easy house shots and advanced bowling ball technology. The goal for people nowadays should be higher than just a mere 300 or 800. It should be 900.
You need to compete for something greater than just winning.

I agree 300 or 800 with the ease of bowling isn't good enough.  800 is and has always been my standard and I nearly got it before the 300.  When you get hot a couple 9/ doesn't ruin the 800 but ruins the 300.  the 300 rewards pressure the 800 rewards consistency.  I've never felt worried getting to an 800. Yet, I do worry every time with the 300.
------
I watched so many high average bowlers play straight somewhere down 5 to gutter.  They've tweeked their throw and drillings to play there league or tourney.  This seems smart you always play from the weakest oil. I know there are patterns that won't work this way but these guys won't bowl on them.  You're saying "What's this got to do with 300 or 800?"  Plenty if you can concour one line for all conditions what place stands a chance.  Is that not the best way to achive the perfect goal.  Whoever thinks I must concour all lines on all conditons with my limitless arsenal is going to work the hardest to get to that 300 800. It's not an easy answer for me. I had a 300/802 a couple of weeks ago, and what stuck with me was the 300. It was one of those rare nights where I felt locked in and every shot that game was legitimate, so it felt great. I didn't know I had thrown a 800 until someone mentioned it to me after we finished everything up.

There was nothing like getting that first 800 several years ago, but after you've accumulated several of each, at least for me, a good 300 is special.

I am not positive but it takes a legit 30 strikes out of 36 in order to bowl an 800. 12 strikes is way easier than 30.
