300 or 800 which would you rather have ?
« on: July 22, 2011, 02:30:31 AM »
I almost got my first 800 last night and am still looking for my first 300. Since my brother got his 300 last year, my mom is always saying you'll get your 300 someday. I don't think people understand that the 800 is almost better than the 300. I might want the 800 first, but would gladly take either. Any thoughts ?

Little thought experiment: Say you have a handful of both 300's and 800's (so you're not looking to pop any cherries). You have 500 even turning the corner and the first 11 the last game. Are you thinking "I need this hit for 300" or "I need this hit for 800"?

I guarantee that almost all of you are thinking both (I would be). Which means every honor score is equally special. That's my answer.

Is this really a question?  300 is perfect, while 800 is not......

I am not positive but it takes a legit 30 strikes out of 36 in order to bowl an 800. 12 strikes is way easier than 30.

30/36 = .8333333333= not perfect

Anybody can get lucky and shoot 300, but it's harder to get that lucky for an 800! I've seen several people get 300's and not shoot 600 with a lots of brooklyn strikes!
Not sure anyone can. I have been bowling since 73 and have had the front 11, 2 times. Once for 298 my 3rd of bowling and then 30 years later and shot 297.

When I tell people I have never shot 300 or 800, they all say, I would never have thought that after seeing you bowl.

To answer the op question. I will take either one. Both of them are accomplishments. 300 can be tough because you have to carry 12 in a row which at times can be a pain. The 800 is tough because you can only miss a few times over 3 games. One thing I have learned this season about shooting 800. Its almost as important in where you miss as it is how many times you miss.

You can bowl a 800 with 24/36 strikes.........only 66.667%

I've seen two different 160-170 average bowlers bowl a 300, neither broke 600 for the series. That's all I need to know about which is better.

Really? I would like to see how that scoring works if you don't mind. I would never have thought it possible.

I agree.  I don't see how that is possible as stated (24/36).  That means that the 10, 11th and 12th balls of all three games were strikes, leaving only 15 strikes for the rest of the frames (15/27).  I don't see 800 that way.

I did this real quick math so I might be wrong and i think someone else might have posted this, but if you go 9/ next 8 then 9/ 9 that equals 268. you do that 3 games its 804. Which is 24 strikes in the set. Now its not 24/36 like some one else stated, but it is 24 strikes. It would be 24/33 strikes.

Ah, ok. That would do it then. I think it was meant as 24 of a possible 36 strikes. I would still rather have that than a 300. And it would be one heck of a triplicate!  ;D

Oddly enough if you go 9/ 9/ 9/ then off the sheet its still 268, but you have to strike 3 more times. You can also go x x 9/9/off the sheet for you guessed it 268 lol  That is why i said earlier its almost as important on when you miss then how many times you miss.

I would give a couple of my 300s for another 800. 300s aren't what they used to be. It's not uncommon to have 2-3 a league night. 800s are harder, u gotta keep up with transition and most of all, pretty much carry 30+ shots a series. You could miss 2shots a game and shoot 268 each game and shoot 804.

Ok, I was wrong, you can still get an 801 if you have eight strikes in a row starting with the 4th frame and leave a nine count in the 12th for a 267 each game.  That will qualify the 24/36 statement.

That gives me hope, now all I need is the skill.  :)

Front 9, with a 9-miss in all three games is 267 triplicate for 801. Fun with math lol

12 frames in a game x 3 games = 36 possible strikes and if they got the 8 strikes per game x 3 = 24 strikes, that would answer the stated 24/36 comment!
