300 question
« on: October 08, 2003, 12:08:16 AM »
I have a question.  In the past 2 weeks I have had the front 8 and front 9.  To all of you that have shot 300's how do you get past this point.  How do you calm yourself enough to excute well enough in the 10th.  In my local area 300's are not that common like I hear others talk about.  There were only 5 in the association last year.  So, like last week I had the first 8 and as I go to get up for the 9th frame I look around and there are people everywhere.  Honestly I was fine with everything up until that point.  How do you block all that out?

I didnt even realize it, then after the 11th one thast where it hit, but i took time, calmed myself down,, was easy, probably bcuz it was in practice, but freinds(lots of em) and parents were all watching.

The common suggestions are:

One shot at a time.
Don’t get ahead of yourself.
Take deep breathes to relax.

Honestly, most do choke them off the first few times, I know I did.

Now days I just try and re-create the feel of a good shot that I have going. Don’t think mechanics just let the mind imagine the feel. This seems to free me up from the moment and execute.

Anymore if I get the first ten I also go “It’s just 3 in the tenth, I’ve done that a thousand times before”. Forget the front 9 they are history you are now working on the future.

Most people seem to get really close right before it happens.  After you seen the first 8 and 9 enough times it will seem like you've started off with the first two or three.  Try to relax and try to learn what tendencies you have when in that kind of pressure.  Some may forget to follow through and tug the ball.  Others may relax so much that the forget to put anything on the ball and miss out.

I know a guy who will move two boards left (he's a righty) every time he gets to the first 9.  He tends to pull the ball and he knows that and has learned to move to adjust.

I'm sure it will happen very soon.

Andy,

Last season I shot four 279's four weeks in a row using four different balls.

I have shot one 299 and one 300 and what I can offer you is to take deeper breaths when you're on the approach.  Usually it will slow your heart rate down a tiny bit when you're that excited and calm your itchy nerves.

I also think I'm open bowling when it comes down to the tenth.  It may also help you to have your friends nearby to talk with them about non-bowling related things.  I think most importantly, which kills me when I'm up at the tenth, is let the other people bowl, don't let them give you 24 lane respect so it seems like you're the only one bowling.

You should have seen my 11th ball of the 299 game, when I realized I had a hole in my chest from all those eyes, I could barely throw the ball down the lane.  It was a disgusting shot that carried, and the 12th was the most beautiful ball a righty could throw, but oddly enough I left the seven pin.

Try to stay relaxed.  Keep talking with your teammates.  Walk around a bit to stay loose.  Take a deep breath and just think about making a good shot.  Don't try to make the perfect shot or you'll probably tense up.

Wow, must have been good scores, either way.

As for stress, beats me... I hit 5 strikes to open a game about two months ago and on that six frame I was dripping sweat and shaking like a paint mixer.

However, a few weeks ago I was hitting all my marks, getting strikes, closing every frame and again I started getting very nervous, I was working on my best score yet.

So about the 5th frame I decided, no more scoreboard watching.

I took a few deep breaths took one last look at the monitor and that was that, I didnt look back until the last pin was knocked down.

It helped, while I didnt get even close to a perfect game I did get my best score ever, funny thing was my wife had to tell my the game was over, since I stopped looking at the board I lost count.

It really helped and next time I start getting shaky, I plan to do the same thing.

This of course probably wont help with a perfect game much as you obviously know you've been bowling strikes.

But, still... either way, good luck with it, it'll come to you soon enough.

Here's my "limited" experience.
I've only shot one 300 - but I didn't have any 299s beforehand.
I had the front 8 at least a dozen times that season, but never got past that point. When I got up to shot in the 9th, I went through the whole preshot thing, focused on my mark, then concentrated on flushing my mind clear of any of those little voices.
After I got the 9th, it got progressively easier.
I've had the front 10 twice since then. Once, the 11th shot was perfect, for a solid 7 (I'm a righty). The second time, just as I was stepping on the approach, someone asked me if I knew that I had the front 10. Duh. They got the desired result - I choked and left a 2-4-5.

My experiences have been better than a friend of a friend who had seventeen 298-299 games before he finally shot 300. I'm glad I did it the first time!

Don't take ANY more time on the approach than you have to.  Don't TRY to throw the shot, just let your instincts take over.

Couple of things that I do not guaranteed to work for everyone....lol.

1) If you have thrown that many in a row....you have to believe that you are "on" and nothing can stop you.

2) You can be nervous all you want, but it doesn't help. I think you can be one of two things....nervous or a little cocky. I always opt the latter and by expecting to toss a good shot generally you will.

3) Someone told me once "You can't help the carry, but all you can do is throw a good shot". I always try to remember this as it helps to know you don't have to be perfect or throw a perfect shot.

4)Don't sit around looking at the scoreboard or sit waiting for your next shot.
B/S as usual with your teamates or whoever take your mind off things.

5)Don't move your line or whatever trying to expect that you will let up on the shot. If it ain't broke...Now if you carried through the beak last time on that lane, move.

6)Remember that millions of people have done it and they are no better than you.

7) After the 10th ball walk back turn back to the pins wait for the ball, preshot (wipe ball off) etc. as soon as you are ready....GO! same for the 12th.

8)When I have something like that going on I can let myself think about whatever but when I step on the approach...it's me rolling the ball to my mark just like always.

9) Beer does help.

10)Go collect winnings at front desk and act as if its no big deal

I wish!! I've thrown the front 8 about 5 times and the front 9 three times aside from the 5 front 8's. Every time, I get as far as the 8th, I always start to get nervous and thinking too much about how to execute the next 3 or 4 shots. That is the key though, do not think about it and just relax as if it were your first frame. Easier said than done though because you do have the though in your mind and no matter what, you always think about it in some way. Just try to relax, you'll get it eventually. Hopefully I do too!!

1. Deep breaths, if I feel uptight on the approach in any situation, a deep breath realy helps me.

2. What Bob just said... focus on something.  Normally for me it's keeping my feet slow, or making sure I have a good strong follow thru and extension after releasing the ball.

3. Read this one above also... keep your mind off it... talk to friends/teammates.  For my big series, it was mixed league and I was chasing my 1.5 year old around the concourse with my wife, it was a rainy night so the shoe cover was going on and off too.  All I had time to think about was picking my ball up and executing a shot.  Also, my friend shot a 300 for a $10,000 bonus in a tourney.  The guys he was bowling with were deliberately talking to him about fishing and anything else that came up.  He said that helped him a lot.

You'll get it... if you've got the shot figured out it will come, probably when you least expect it.

Not sure about what to do. But I know what NOT to do.
On my Monday night league (10 5 man teams) One guy had
11. The secretary runs around telling everyone to stop bowling
so this guy could have silence... You guessed it. Leaves a 4 pin.
I think if the guy had the first 11 with all the noise... Don't change his environment. Just let him bowl.

There is a book called "Bowling 300" it is written by Dan Herbst assisted by Mark Baker. In the book Mark Baker (over 30 300s at the time) describes his tendencies in that situation and what he does to overcome it, like moving 2 boards right because he gets amped up and throws it too hard. Some people tighten up their swing and pull the ball, they should move left 1 board with their feet, this gives them the feeling of swinging the ball out farther and when they pull the shot, they will pull it back on line, and most likely leave a 10 pin if they pull the ball into the oil, but they will have a better chance than if they didn't move at all. He also said that when he becomes nervous his hand perspires, so he keeps his rosin bag handy.

One thing that works for me with dealing with crowds watching me bowl is to tune them out and look at the ball return when I am walking back and stay in the settee area after the 9th one and start taking deep breaths and just relax before I start getting past the point where deep breathing will help. After the front 8 I assess any adjustments that might need to be made when I return to that lane again in the 10th. After the front 9 I visualize myself throwing all 3 in the 10th one at a time and making sure I don't hold anything back. The worst feeling is if you don't make it because you babied the shot and put everything into it. If I don't carry, it just wasn't meant to be, but it wasn't because I didn't throw the ball to the best of my ability.

It takes familiarity before you will be comfortable in any situation, the more times you get there the easier it gets.

Good Luck
