Carry
« on: October 18, 2005, 04:16:59 AM »
We all talk about how some balls carry, others do not. Some will say their companies balls will carry better than others. My question is, what determines at pocket impact the amount of energy that is transfered to the pins. Two balls with the same same RG, same coverstock, but completly different core will carry differently. But why?

I am now throwing my first storm ball. All my other equipmnet, albiet older, is Track. All my Track equipment carries in almost the same way. Track equipment, for me really does a good job "domino" action toward the pit. My fired up on the other hand spreads the pins "out". I have noticed that most of my track equipment I can carry flush or high, but with this fired up, I can carry flush or light. If I go high, I leave some intresting things.

I am just making general observations. I know everyone's results are different, but I was just curious.

There are several things that affect carry from ball to ball.
For me the primary difference is how much tilt and rotation (angle) the ball has when it hits the pocket.
I carry ligher hits better when the ball has a bit more t & r and high hits when the ball has a bit less.
The Fired Up has very good length so I suspect you are carrying differently for the same reason.
These different roll characteristics are also what causes ringing and flat 10s.

I hit my fired up with a green pad, so it's really not that shiny. I get the same length as I do my crash, except about 2 or 3 boards more recovery. I was looking more specifically about the COR of the ball.

The COR of the ball is primarily affected by the density of the inner core.
The more dense the higher the COR.
This is why metals are not allowed as well as a spec for core material maximum density.

There is some info on COR in a pdf file link on this page.
