Faster thumb release = more revs?
« on: April 27, 2007, 08:18:31 AM »
I ask this because last night I was playing around with different pitches, I kicked out my pitch by 1/16. Now before I go any further I do need to shorten my span as I realized afterwards, but one thing I noticed was that by kicking out the pitch it was creating a faster thumb release, which in turn, was generating alot more revs. I don't consider myself rev challenged, but man, I have never rev'd a ball like that before and it looked clean and effortless. Is the reversing of pitch and faster thumb release generally go together, or is this just something I am expierencing? Anyway, I was just curious. What are your thoughts.

Well all I can do is tell you my experience with moving to away pitch, and I think you are on to something here.  I was at 3/8 palm pitch and went to 1/8 away, and it made a pretty big difference.  I combined this with a change from 1/4 reverse to a quarter forward.

The difference was that I stopped grabbing the crap out of the ball.  Even though it felt "comfortable", I still had to grab it to stay in it long enough not to drop it.  Now my thumb is straight and relaxed inside the ball, and it comes out clean and easy.

I have gained revs and pins on my average since I have made this change and gotten used to it.  The result was a cleaner, more powerful release, and I didn't have to change anything except concentrate on rolling the ball more than lofting it.

Ok, I like what I am reading because I was about to post a question regarding thumb pitch.

My thumb pitch is ZERO and I can feel myself grab the ball a lot more than usual.  I am also experiencing thumb pain.  I have 3 balls that I want to experiment with as far as thumb pitches go.  I'm also going to go back to not using inserts.

So please explain it to me like I'm in 1st Grade.  To gain an easier release of the ball and possibly more revs/increased axis rotation, what is the drilling suggestion?

I went reverse pitch once and smashed my ankle 3 times in a couple weeks -- dead flush ownage right on the bone. Have been wearing a Robbies ankle guard out of paranoia since.

The ball was falling off my hand way too soon.
