40 yrs and older with swelling hands
« on: November 04, 2016, 01:54:18 PM »
My hand swells up after two games once in a while.  I just want to know if you 80's and 70's kids have tips to share in dealing with this. My hand was swollen and my fingers and thumb fit created issues with my delivery missing crucial shots and loosing by 11 sticks. yup, that's my excuse lol

or is medication the better solution before leagues..

thanks...

It could be something you're eating or drinking. If I'm drinking Redd's I won't be able to fit my fingers in my inserts by game three.

In addition to dietary issues, like too much salt, sometimes a wrist support put on too snugly will cause the thumb and fingers to swell enough to be a problem.  I have a forearm support, like the ones for tennis elbow, that will cause swelling in the thumb if I have it too tight also.

Like you, it takes a game or two before it happens.  What I do is squeeze tightly my thumb for a few minutes and the thumb gets back to normal size.  That usually is enough to get me through the night until I remove the support(s).

My friend has a thumb insert (smaller size) that he keeps on his thumb 5-10 minutes before he bowls to get the thumb to it's normal size.  His thumb is usually swollen before he starts bowling.

Look at it this way.  As we use muscles they tend to swell until they cool back down.  The only muscles where minimal swelling would be noticed would be the thumb and fingers in bowling because we have them precisely fit, and usually not right after bowling when there could be swelling.  Diet can contribute, but sometimes it has nothing to do with it.

On a sidenote, all my thumb holes have room for at least 4-7 pieces of tape for that reason.  I can always remove a piece or two...

It's the human condition: your extremities swell and shrink to different degrees. Youth or getting older has little to do with it.

As mentioned, reduce or eliminate your intake of salted foods (french fries, potato chis, etc.) just before and during bowling. Beer used to make my fingers swell up until I literally couldn't put my finger or thumb into the ball. I stopped drinking beer during bowling for just that reason.

Normally, your thumb hole should be as large (without tape in it) as your thumb will ever get. In case you haven't found that "outer Limit" yet, carry some 100 grit sandpaper with you AT ALL TIMES!!! I have a feeling that after this situation, you will do that.

White tape is your best friend for thumb hole adjustments, even if you carry 3 different sized Switch-Grips thumb inserts. You can always put one piece of black tape, if needs be, over the white tape.

As I was editing my post, charlest was on the exact same thought process.  Sick minds think alike?

I have three different sizes thumb IT and the idea of keeping the thumb inside a smaller thumb IT sound like the towel trick.

I don't use any wrist or hand devices, and for tape, I use Magic Carpet on the back and 1 to 3 white tapes up front. I think the rubbing of the magic carpet tape is a factor too.

For diner, I had had half a bowl or two cups of tomato soup, half a turkey sandwich, and two 1" squares of pecan pie 4 hours prior to leagues. I bowl at 9:15pm.

but my diet isn't healthy too...

IT thumb and Vaccu grips have saved me....I have had trouble with my fingers for years. In the past I use to not glue the backs of my grips and use pieces if plastic cup I could add or subtract to loosen or tighten my fingers. Vaccu grip drilling has changed all of that for me!
