WMB or Pure Energy
« on: January 03, 2006, 10:21:10 AM »
I am currently using a Particle Blade. I am looking for a new ball and wondered if anybody could give me an idea which ball will give the best control in med. heavy oil to heavy oil and has good carry.

Two very different balls.  Pure Energy is a very control type of ball.  It is made for true Heavy Oil.  I got rid of my WMB because it was very erratic, did not handle that much oil, and was a too high maintenance ball for me.  In Dyno Land, you would be good with a High Energy, Pure Energy or CM.  Pure Energy and the CM will handle the most oil.  The CM is core strong, the PE is Cover strong.  The WMB is a good ball, but not a big oiler, the Total SHock and Awe is a better bet.

I'd also say the WMB is not a true control piece. I do not own one, but I have seen some in action. It is a true heavy oil ball, but the core is so strong that the WMB apperas to be hard to control at the breakpoint, and with the particle coverstock it seems to burn out if there is not enough oil. The new Seek & Destroy could be similar, it is supposed to react even sooner and stronger!

A heavy oil ball I can recommend is the XXXcel from Ebonite. This thing also moves a lot (asymmetric core), OOB a true oil monster. Coverstock is easily adjustable for less oil and more length.

Another good control piece is the Ultimate Inferno from Brunswick. Symmetrical core, smooth, strong. They should be on sale soon since a replacement is about to hit the stores, nevertheless another benchmark ball in oil.

There are also other, older balls I'd recommend, but I think you are looking for something current.

I'll have to disagree with dizzyfugu.  For me, the WMB is the ultimate control ball for medium to med/heavy oil.  Mine is at 800 grit, but if left at the box surface of 500 grit, it could handle everything up to true heavy oil.  I don't know much about the Pure Energy, but the WMB is a great piece for what you described.  Recently I have been bowling tournaments on tougher lane conditions (PBA and sport patterns), and the WMB has been my go to ball for most of them.  Other balls jerk too hard when coming out of the oil, but not the WMB.  Again, I don't know much about the Pure Energy, but I don't think you could go wrong with the WMB.

Also, a lot depends on the drill.  It is my opinion people drill Assym balls using the strong position too often.  It is not for everyone, but it does cause the ball to overeact in some conditions.  It does give the perception that the ball is too "jerky".
