5 man line up
« on: June 10, 2013, 12:42:25 PM »
How would you set up your five man line up beside the traditional
in order (high avg, lowest avg, second lowest avg, 2nd highest avg, highest avg)

I wanna mix it up. Y not get the weakest links out the way early? What is the training behind how line up currently are made?

I always think it is good to put the best 2 bowlers at the top, get them both on strings of strikes early to apply pressure to the other team, then at the 3rd position put the weakest, 4th the next stronger and 5th as the 3rd strongest, also that way when the 10th comes those top 2 bowlers again can get up and set the tone for the 10th and give the other guys some confidence going into their 10th frames.

You're best bowlers should be you first bowler and your anchor man. No. 2 should be a solid guy who makes his spares and string some strikes occasionally. No. 3 can be your weakest guy. No. 4 is a good spare shooter and maybe your most dangerous guy.

We always put the bowler that fills the most frames as lead-off.  Usually works out the best bowler.  The anchor bowler is the bowler with the biggest strike ball--and all or nothing guy.  In front of the anchor bowler I'd put the bowler that can handle the most pressure.  Other than those, I think the rest are interchangeable.

The Leadoff would be a person who the rest of a team could get a really good read off of lane condition wise and was ultra consistent.

2 Place would be either a lefty with the same quality or a guy who was for lack of a better term the weak link.

3 Would be a guy who could make sure to put together a strong game and set things up for the set up and anchor bowlers. Also must be a good spare shooter.

4 would be the second strongest bowler and a bowler who could really put up some numbers. Great spare shooter an and clutch bowler for the 9th frame.

5 The most consistent and talented player who could make shots under pressure and also read what the other guys are doing and make quick adjustments.

We had a great team name in a 5 man league: THE MARKS BROTHERS (I am not sure if I was Groucho or Chico). Our best bowler (205-210) lead off, and I followed in the #2 spot. TDC57 correctly described me: a good spare shooter who "occasionally" would string some strikes. My average was in the 185-190 range. Our 2nd best bowler (195-200) was the anchor man. Our 2 bowlers with lower averages (170s) were slotted ##3 and 4. This arrangement worked very well. We stayed together for nearly 10 years and were very competitive. In fact, it was my most enjoyable league.

On my team, there are 2 bowlers that average around 210-215.  The rest of us except for 1 guy are all averaging between 180 and 195.  This is how my team is set up.

1.  Our leadoff guy averages around 215, has a consistently good strike ball and makes around 95% of his spares.  He also had 3 sanctioned 300's this year, more than anyone else in our league.  He gets the rest of the team going.

2.  Our lefty goes in this spot.  He has the lowest average on the team but when he's on, he's on.

3.  This is where I am slotted.  I have a good strike ball, consistently average between 190-195, and have a good spare conversion rate.  Plus, I am versatile on where I can play the lane, and throw well on most of the patterns we use, including our flat patterns.  My A game is playing outside, but can move in and hook it when needed.  One other advantage with me is that I can throw hard (19-23mph) when needed.  This means I can stay on a line longer than most, and can convert some tougher splits, which can and does help.

4.  This is where we slot one of our other consistent guys.  He averages between 195 and 205 and stays out of trouble on the lane.  He is a great spare shooter, strings strikes together, and does a great job setting up our anchor in the 9th frame.  Our guy here is also versatile, being able to play both inside and outside when needed.

5.  This is where we slot our cranker.  He has a huge strike ball, has no problem stringing a lot of strikes together, makes a good percentage of his spares, and is very good under pressure.  He also can adjust very quickly.  Our advantage here is that he is also able to move deeper than anyone else in our league and is very successful with this.  His average is around 215.

This arrangement worked very well for us just finishing our first year together as a team.  We already have committed to coming back this fall and using the same arrangement as we were competitive all year.  It was the most enjoyable league I've been a part of in a long time.

My team coming up this year, we are looking at:

Righty - 203 and going up, me
Righty - 200 and going up.
Lefty   - 195 young and improving
Lefty   - 210 Solid consistant bowler.
Righy  - 220+ every other week alternating with a righty  215+.

The two lead off righties, we have been bowling together for a little while, and have developed a nack for reading and adjusting eachother's shots, if we miss them.

The 2nd lefty is good at coaching and calming, and obv. speaks "lefty", and will be helping out our #3 bowler.
