5 step or 4 step help!!!
« on: September 08, 2004, 05:25:05 PM »
i have a problem i used to use a five step but switched when a friend and expierianced bowler taught me to do a four step.I have been struggling with staying in time and stuter stepping imbetween the 2nd and 3rd step. So i tried going back to a five and didnt feel half as comfortable as i did before so im staying with the four is this a good decision or should i work my five back untill it is normal again?

You should learn the four step before you can move to a five,if you ever do!

I would stay with whatever makes you most comfortable. When changing from 5 steps down to 4, this probably should have been done with an experienced, certified coach over an experienced bowler. Saying you should make a change in your style and actually spending the time and effort it takes to work on the change are two completely different areas. If you feel better about 4 steps over 5, stick with the 4 step. Your body will tell you what feels more natural.

I've always been a 4 stepper and never had the inclination to change. I generate enough ball speed in 4 steps and try to keep everything evenly paced from step to step.

I agree with PhireX.  The four step can be used to give you any number of steps once you learn it.  It does sound like you have a timing issue.  The stutter step might be because your arm is out of sync with your footwork.  How are you at the line?  Are you balanced there?

As MSC2471 said, the best thing would be to get a coach to watch you.  Sometimes even doing something correct will 'feel' wrong because it is something new for the body's muscles and will not 'feel' correct until you get the muscle memory down.  Having a coach to give you feedback on what you are doing and offering ideas of what to do correctly is of great benefit.

If you dont have a coach available in your area, check out some of the tips that are available on the web.  One such site is:
http://www.rollrite.co.uk/coaching.php
It has a lot of the basic drills to help in learning timing.

Here is a picture of a bowler in the four step (cant find anything better right now):  http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/kennmelvin/tTiming.Htm
You would have to have someone else watch you to see how you compare but having a mental picture of what/where you should be in relation to the arm and footwork will go a long way to helping.

I would skip around change back and forth after each shot and add some more stutter steps!
