Cracked Balls

I have never had balls crack like they do now. Chipping around the fingers and thumb, ok.  In the last year, I have had a 900 Global (3 yrs old) crack while on the rack in my basement, a Storm Modern Marvel (1yr old), a Storm tropical storm (2yr old) and a C300 Scout (6monhs old) crack on the floor of my closet.  No extreme temperature changes.  Is anyone else having issues with balls cracking?  Can I do something else to keep them from cracking?

Hey Rightycomplex I think the last paragraph of your post rings very true for me yet it had never occurred to me before now! I have never in my long career of bowling (since 06) ha ha, had any balls crack. Own 16 in all, Wife Say's to many ha! I've had 2 older (Storm Passion, Storm Thunderstruck solid) and 2 newer (Storm Tropical yellow and purple, Hammer Jigsaw) all beyond anything more than paperweights. Oh yea and I get why not the other ones (Storm SuperCharge or Hot Rod sitting right with them). Well live and learn right!!! Told the Wife and She said get the rest in the boxes and of the ground on to the shelfs. Thanks for info.

There are probably several factors but for me once I went away from finger inserts my problems was almost completely eliminated. I think the glue has a lot to do with it. I do the opposite when I glue slugs or inserts. I try and put the glue below the shell to keep it from touching the resin.

When I used inserts it was 1 in 5 bowling balls may crack, many just sitting on the floor in my office ect. Since no inserts I have had 2 crack in roughly 200. Both from the thumb out. Both were more exposed to the climate because they were older and not used.

Has anybody ever had, heard of or seen a new non-drilled ball crack??? I have had 4 balls crack on me including one of my yeah baby balls. (no filler) all were drilled. I have several NIB balls in the closet. I never considered them to have the possibility of cracking. Just wondering. Thanks.

Saw a Sure Fire or one of those non-filler "Fire" balls from Storm with a crack NIB from a distributor once...

I have had several NIB balls crack. Just a couple of days ago I pulled a NIB Ebonite  Shooter that was cracked all the way around. I ever had 1 crack on its way from the distributor. I have had every brand etc crack at some time or another. It seems like the stuff from San Antonio have a tendency to crack more often( 900 Global and also Track and Columbia before Ebonite took them over) which I think has to do with the high temps in the summer makes them cure too quick.

Ebonite released a study a few years ago relating to this very problem.

They determined that bowling balls that had been drilled and left to stand for a period of time, had a tendency to crack or more correctly split as a result of gravity acting upon the inner core against the outer core and cover, more specifically on areas of the ball that had been weakened by drilling.  The extra density of the inner core acts against the outer core/cover which is less dense and the pressure exerted over a period of time causes the cover and outer core to split.

Ebonite recommended that any balls sitting in bags, on shelves etc for any extended time be rotated every few weeks in order to prevent constant stress by the inner core on the outer core/cover.  By doing this I have had vastly fewer balls split.
