Guardian overlay??

What is a Guardian overlay, exactly?  Does it spray on? Hook more? Hold oil in place better or worse? I never really have heard this discussed in any detail, and have always wondered.... thanks!

imagine a piece of scotch-tape that's 39 boards wide and sixty feet long-----that's basically what guardian is. it's an overlay used on well worn wood lanes to extend their life. it's a very soft and pliable surface, therefore it can burn up a bowling balls energy very quickly.

Can you look at a lane surface and see it? And is it the entire length of the lane, or sometimes just the heads?

If applied to the head area only it is possibly the worse lane surface to play on if the lane mane can't find the right oil pattern to lay on it without compromising the way the rest of the lane plays.

We've been fighting all year to find the right pattern to put down on this stuff. A buddy of mine bought a 16 lane center that has Guardian on the entire lane. It is so touchy on what you put down it's not even funny. The middle of the lane surface is burned up and the outsides look like they never have been touched. You put down to much oil the outsides get so slick you start picking off the 6-10 and if you back off a touch it's like bowling in the sierra. We've talked to Kegel and tried some of their ideas and nothing seems to work. If any of you guys have any ideas please let me know.

The one's that I've seen run anywhere from 20 to 30 feet leaving the backends the orginal wood surface (usually oak).

From my experience, when they oil them, they are super slick until the ball meets the backends and then the balls fly off them (if clean). If there's carrydown, then theres no backends at all..

guardian was designed for wood lanes.....i'm not sure anyone has attempted to use them on synthetics.

IMO, guardian is essentially a band-aid for the proprietor about to sell, they're just prolonging the enivetable switch to synthetic lanes.  Again, in my opinion, unless Guardian has been improved in the last 10 years, any proprietor interested in keeping high average bowlers happy would think twice before applying guardian.

We had a house back in the '90's that used guardian on the heads.  From what I recall it's essentially non-porus and the oil moves off of if very quickly.  The heads were practially blown out by the 3rd game of league, you couldn't chase the shot left fast enough.  

If sand got onto the lane (winter road sand not swept up), the ball would imbed the sand into the guardian causing air and lane oil to get underneath and make bubbles under it.  It looked terrible and the shot on it was even worse.

You want some fun times, bowl on Guardian that is ripped up.

Went to a house that had it about five years ago for a tournament, and it was missing where it had bubbled up and the bubbles popped. So you had Guardian with wood showing through underneath at random spaces.

The house oiled and then ran tapes, and posted the shot. Try 30 units from gutter to 10 board with 100+ units in the middle.

First game, you couldn't have thrown a ball of sandpaper out there and made it hook.

By the end of the sixth game, one of my guys pulled a house ball off the rack and started throwing straight at the pocket. The oil was soaking through the ripped spaces in the Guardian, getting down to the wood and soaking in. I have never bowled on such crap in my life.

That house went to synthetics next year. No, we didn't cash.

Ugh, I still have nightmares about bowling on Guardian and accidentally leaving my Gyro Pro at home.
