I have used the same balls for the last 5 years and scored great, and seem's all these bowlers bring all these new balls or 6 ball arsenals and try to figure out why they are not scoring well. So my question is, does a good bowler really need more than 2 balls.

I thought is was the amount of revs one can put on the ball.(sarcasm off) If one can adjust, then one does not need an arsenal.

Not necessarily.  I can take either my Dimension or my Gravity Shift and get to the pocket on practically any oil pattern imaginable with either of them.  However, getting to the pocket and actually carrying are two different stories.  You can only adjust so much for ball reaction if you're just plain throwing the wrong ball for the conditions.

There is a guy that seems to win PBA tournaments by throwing a red ball up 5 most of the time.

Some guys can get away with using fewer balls, some can't.  It's all based on your game, and how willing you are to move out of your comfort zone.  On a THS there really isn't a reason to carry more than a few balls, the pattern makes most stuff react the same anyway.

Dan,
Point taken. Although, I feel this is wear one who has the ability to change their release and to be able to alter revolutions thereby changing the balls roll characteristic would not need to make as many ball changes. Most of the bowlers I see make multiple ball changes use the same line and release all the time. Nothing wrong with it, just think the amount of adjustments one can make can limit the number of balls one needs to lug around.

I believe reading the oil pattern is key.  Being able to adjust from there, inside, outside, more/less loft, more/less speed can make any ball work, and shows your skill.  Your 5-10 minutes of practice before the game starts should be enough to find the line with any ball.  I've always found in conversations that those who are quick to change balls usually admit they are not good at adjusting.  They just can't play an inside shot, role the ball faster, or loft it a couple feet further down the lane to find a little push.  Its 2nd arrow or nothing.

Ask Patrick Allen if the right ball in your hand makes a difference. A couple of years ago for the first half of the season he used Track equipment and did nothing. The second half he went back to Ebonite and won his first tourney of the year and dominated that half.

If you don't match up well with your equipment you can bang the pocket all night and not carry. I use more than one ball here in New Jersey because of so many climate changes and the effects on the lane conditions.

Just my 2 cents.

It's totally different if you're comparing tournaments to league.

I'd say a combination of all of the above determines ability, being able to adjust physical game, equipment, and puring shots and succeding over multiple conditions and environments is what determines ability.

For leagues on THS, I usually carry 4, because I have a 4 ball bag and 1 of them is a plastic ball for spares.  If I can't figure out a house shot with 3 balls, something's wrong.  Most of the time on a THS, I can use any ball in my bag, it's just a matter of where I put my feet, hand position, speed and target.  But I'm the type of guy that will punch up a new ball just to see what it's about.  On tougher conditions, matching up with the right ball is much more important because that's where you really see the difference between the different bowling balls in your bag.  On a THS, the key for me most of the time is to have a ball that blends out the over/under that's very common on the league shots in Tucson, especially this year.

But I agree with dogman to a point, if you're bringing that many balls to league, most of the time you're going to end up out thinking yourself, which is a primary reason for not scoring well.  (I'm definitely speaking from experience here.)

I use to bring 4 balls plus 1 spare to league and tournaments, and I try to cover 95% of anything I could face. Background is that I play a traveling league, and the houses (where I only play once or twice a season) tend to be very different from each other, concerning lane surface, oil patterns and technical equipment.

I also found that I, with my slower speed and high track, equipment choice is quite important. I can adjust well with hand positions, but there are certain limits that afford a ball switch in order to keep up an effective ball reaction. I find this more reasonable than fighting with the equipment, trying to overpower lane conditions or compromising my "normal" delivery, just because a ball burns up or skids hopelessly.

IMHO, there's nothing wrong with tons of balls - you just need to know when to use what, and that is, with the modern, very aggressive pieces, a vital part of the game. A bit sad, but matching up well is directly connected with results.
But I am with you that it is a bit funny when 160 average players show up just with high end equipment in the bag, all drilled the same (max hook for sure) and with no useful arsenal to battle diverse lane conditions or have at least different reaction shapes at hand.
